: How do you know when injectors fail?

I recently purchased an 03 LB7 with 47K on it. I have read some posts that guys have realized the injectors have failed when they drain the oil and get several gallons extra out of the motor. And some have diesel coming out of the crankcase vent. Can you feel a drop in power, does it set a check engine light, or ? Just would like to know what to watch out for.
Thanks:help2:

Low oil psi is a start ,as fuel will dilute the oil and it wont have good psi. It will have a distinct white smoke at start up and smell like diesel fuel and may have a stinging odor. Bad Balance rates when checked with a Tech II or scanner. If you start loosing coolant then it may be injector seals or even head gaskets or heads themselves.

When my first injectors went out, the engine made a knocking noise at idle that would go away with a slight change of rpms. Two injectors were out of spec via balance rates and were replaced.
The second time I had long start times both cold and warm. The right bank had a high fuel return rate which qualified me for all 8 to be replaced. Thankfully in both cases no diesel made it into the crankcase.

When mine started acting up, it would stumble / puff smoke at stop lights, then clear up under acceleration.

:iamwithst Lower than normal Oil pressure was my first sign. So I went home and changed the oil, along with GALLONS of fuel....took about 2 1/2 of the big drain pans to drain the case....

Rough idle here.

how low will the psi be?

IIRC mine was 15psi idling and 25-30psi driving

so it was basically cut in half

yeah, mine dropped oil pressure in half of what it normally was holding. When I went home to change oil I noticed that whatever is was coming out from there it was not oil but a fuel-oil combination. Hard starts cold or warm was also happening. Finally, that annoying knocking at idle was something that was bothering me always. It was injectors giving up the ghost:eek: . Anyways, that knocking is still there and the SES light just came on AGAIN. Maybe its time for a LBZ?:ro)
