Today I stopped in at a local independent garage to deliver a prop {I'm in the boat prop repair and sales business as a retirement job} to one of the mechanics that works there. I know just about everybody that is there, the 2 brothers that are co-owners are the 2nd generation and I've known them since they were little kids in the way at Daddy's shop. Daddy has retired and sold out to them.

One of the brothers showed me an 01 GMC Dmax,92k, in shop with blown engine. Belonged to an erosion control company that puts up silt fences at sites where grading is/has been done and silt fences must be used to control erosion and stream siltation.

The company has it's own shop for minor repairs and PM on co vehicles. This truck had been in co shop for servicing, had K&N air filter, fairly large one, replacing air box with a cylindrical filter about 8"X10".

Seems the grease monkey in co shop had decided to use spray brake cleaner to clean air filter and put back on engine and start up and allow air flow to dry filter!

Well, you can guess what happened when the brake cleaner got in engine. It ran away in an uncontrolled, screaming burst of rpm to the max. The pushrods are bent till hell wouldn't have them and God knows what else is busted,

They took to dealer, who pulled valve covers and push rods, saw massive evidence of over revving and said " no way Jose".

Truck was then towed to aforementioned shop, who had prepared an estimate of $15,000 for factory new engine installed. This is more than blue book for the truck!

People sometimes that diesels have no throttle plates and any external source of fuel can/will mean a runaway engine.

Whoops is right! Quite often there are used LB7's on ebay. That is the way I would be going!

Wow! So a truck with 4 miles on it was totalled? That is bad luck right there. An engine sitting there like that would be the perfect time to try and retrofit an actual down pipe before install.
