Is there enough room in the bed of a Duramax to haul a quad comfortably or do you need a trailer?

Not sure on some of the bigger ones, but I've hauled a Yamaha Wolverine with the tailgate closed before I got my toolbox... short bed...

I have an Outlander 800 Max XT (94" long), it fits just fine, but I do have a long box.

I hauled my Honda Rancher AT (400cc 4x4) around with my shortbed 2500 prior to installing the aux fuel tank. Now my 6.5 bed is about a 5 footer.

You would be fine with darn near all quads, unless its a really large one then you might have to leave the gate down on a shortbed. Width wise you're fine, I believe there is 48-49" between wheel wells. The Honda 400 was only about 41 wide.

We ended up buying a 12x7 aluminum trailer to haul 3 ATV's around on. They are side loaded, as the trailer ramp can be moved where-ever, and it has only a 3" lip on the sides. Very practical, so then you can still use the truck bed for hauling other cargo. www.Tritontrailers.com

I haul a Yamaha Rhino (UTV 2 seater) in the back of my truck when its the only quad going. It fits but its tight. Stock tires you can close the tailgate. With bigguns on you gotta leave it down and strap it in good. I also have a Grizzly and it fits easily.

A short box might be tight for some models.

It's the same thing as owning a Duramx...You drive around with a big grin and everyone gives you a thumb up and wants to talk to you about it :D

Bombardier Outlander 800 - An 800cc, twin cylinder, rotary engine ATV. The biggest, baddest ATV currently being produced. :D

Oh, and the suspension is licensed from Hummer.

Good point...I have always had long boxes and he didn't specify. A SB might give ya some trouble.

I've always had bikes, but I have had my friend's Grizzly in the bed on more than one occasion. Tailgate just closes.
One dirtbike you can kick sideways and close the gate. Put two in there, and they have to be left hanging out.

Rotax is a registered trademark. Rotary is a type of engine. So yes, these have a Rotax rotary engine.

Really? According to their website it is an 800cc, 4 stroke, V-twin, liquid cooled, 8 valve, SOHC engine, unless I'm looking at the wrong spec page (Outlander 800 H.O. EFI), but it does say it is made by Rotax.

I put my Polaris 700 sportsman in and can close the gate. It is a little tricky since I have to back it in or the winch will break out the rear cab window.

I got the same 4-wheeler its SWEEET!!! Havn't had a chance to put it in my truck since i was only home a short time before i went back to Iraq (where i currently am) Take a look on the Yamaha web-page they got the new 700 FI Grizzly out!!! For all of you guys with a short bed try putting an old tire in front of ur ATV so it doesn't have a chance to hit the window. Had a Friend of mine send his Polaris 700 though back window and it was $$$!!

I have a Polaris X2 which is a long wheelbase two seat quad and it fits in the bed (short bed) but I have to leave the tailgate down. The wheels however are in the bed and not on the tailgate. You do have to watch the rear window though as it will touch the window before the bed. I would imagine that replaceing the rear window could get rather pricey....

Actually, it is a real question. I'm looking into getting both a Duramax and a quad in the next year. In the mean time I'm trying to come up with any and all questions before I make the big purchase. It's better to know ahead of time than to figure it out after I've spent a lot of money.

If a quad will fit (which obviously it depends on which one I go with) then I don't have to look into buying a trailer.

The truth is, I'm living in a town right now where I don't know anybody (just moved here) and besides walking up to strangers with a Duramax, the only way to find out the answer to a question like this is to ask you guys.

Thank you for your concern of the community, but yes it is a real question. Obviously each time I post there will be self promotion in my signature, but I've paid for the right to do this.;)

Hope this answers your question clearly enough.

Best Regards,

Jerod

Your real question should be about the box size, not the Duramax (although IMO I'd never be without the Duramax). With a short box, you will have problems with big ATV's. Long box you can get the biggest ATV in. Flatbed you could get 2 ATV's on it. So it comes back to the personal preference...Do you want a short box or long box, do you want to pull a trailer? Each to their own...I prefer a long box for the space and i can fit my big ATV in it. I also have a trailer when i need more than 1 ATV. I guess it depends on which you buy first, the second one will need to fit the first purchase.

I'm definately gonna get a short box...so I am prepared to have to get a trailer depending on what bike I go with. Thanks for your advice!

Polaris sportsman 500 will fit with the tailgate closed if you back it in but it blows backing it up that angle. At least it fit in my 1/2 ton that way. i have a winch and it sticks out a little. I leave the tailgate down and 'tie 'er in"

the angle does suck

i back my truck up to the curb, then put the ramps on it. the angle of my grass helps too, but still steep!

On my other truck the tailgate cables broke after i got the machine in the truck, lucky. I made a device to take the weight off the tailgate when loading..
