: What & Why, Range shift inhibited

I pulled out of the driveway in reverse, placed the truck in neutral and coasted down the road. (coasting forward of course)Top speed 10 or 15 mph.

Part way down the road I put it in Drive and all of a sudden......."Range shift Inhibited" is flashing in my face. The "D" was also flashing, Even tho I gave it a bit of throttle, the engine rpm would speed up but no forward movement, still coasting down the road. WTF!

I get to the stop sign and put the truck in park, then back into Drive and away it goes, "Range shift Inhibited" is no longer flashing and all seems well.

Is this a problem, should I have this checked out at the dealer or is this just some goofy one shot glitch because of me coasting down the road?

Thanks for any enlightenment

The only problem I know of that had shifting symptoms is the NSBU switch. It's a rectangular box on the drivers side of the trans that the gear selector shadt runs through. It tells the computers which gear your in and it can go bad. I don't know if it sends the range shift inhibited code or not but it will cause your PRND to flash.

The 04's should all have the new and improved switch so I might be wrong with this advice. Its a place to start.

Well I spoke to an Allison rep this morning about it,

The guy tells me not to do that,

I apparently was going fast enough so that when I snicked it back in Drive the speed sensor felt that I was going too fast to engage, so it wouldn't allow it.

Also told me NOT to coast in neutral.

Smart stuff!

I agree with 04ROB and the Ally rep. I have never triied this but is makes a lot of sense.
