There are a couple of ways to improve the shifting of the 4L80e transmission. These include shift kits (trans-go), in-line interceptors and performance chips, like Heaths and others, that change the shifting characteristics of the transmission. When we put aside the other benefits of a performace chip, what technique gives the best results for 1) the dollar and 2) overall performance?
Also, please feel free to list other things I can do to improve the shifting of my transmission.
Thanks.

i really like the b&m shiftplus+ electronic shift improver that i installed on my 97. $39.95 at jeg's or summitracing.com. very easy installation with only two wires to hookup. there is a tow setting and a race setting and also the off setting. definately feel the difference with firmer shifting.
fluid change also makes a difference.Edited by: steiner43511

steiner43511,
what are the advantages of firmer shifting?
I'd guess that firmer shifts result in more wear on the transmission and on the drivetrain?

I have yet to rebuild a 4L80E, but I was thinking of putting in a 140 sq in. friction pack, and a performance built torque converter. I'm sure there's a few things that can be ported while it's out.
Then a computer modification to tap that potential would be cost effective.Edited by: quantum mechanic

ST what are you doing that requires improved shifting, if towing I'd say HD clutch packs, B&M or other shift improver bodyt which according to my tranny builder & Summit (who offers both) does a better job than the electronic module, also less prone to set a code. A deeper pan I run a finned PML pan www.yourcovers.com (http://www.yourcovers.com) a little less coin than others just as good IMO.
Also I added a Deraile remote trans cooler under the bed controls by a temp switch rated to a 25K tow load, I've pulled up to a 12K tow load never got over 190F in the pan which is where my sensor is.
If building for hotrodding, (DON"T) save that for your gasser toys unless you topdown overhaul all running gear doing what I listed above as well, once you start adding power these enqines produce enough torque to find the weak link quickly and anything Diesel related is big $$$ to fix just my opinion.

firmer shifts= less slippage= less heat= happy trans

Turbine Doc,
I am getting tired of the slow, lazy transition between gears. I would prefer something a little snappier and responsive, especially since I know what the transmission is capable of. I just don't know the best approach to solve the problem.
The reasoning behind my post is to map out an upgrade strategy. Do I look at a performance ECU that contains upgraded transmission code or do I look at a separate transmission interceptor, boost controller, etc... to reach my goals.
I am also experiencing a slight hesitation from a stop or near stop, almost as if the transmission is taking up some slack before engaging. I've read that this may be due to an input sensor that is gunked up. Any ideas?
I tow a light trailer about 3x a year and primarily use the Sub for family + gear transport, vacations, etc...
lupey6.5,
do you really get so much slippage that firmer shifts actually make a difference on the temperature? When you let off of the pedal a bit when/just before shifting, gears will flip in without much slippage at all.
Maybe adding a trans cooler would be a better investment, as it keeps the oil colder all the time, not only when shifting?

the b&m sift plus lets you tach higher before it shifts and then grabs the next gear pretty hard. i don't have a trans temp gauge so i don't have #'s. i bought it for preformance mainly. the 4l80e shifts like grandma's caddy which is nice for my neck but every now and then you gotta embarrass a "fart pipe" honda driver at a stoplight. if he's on the right i give him a lung full of diesel exhaust to boot. for $40 you can't really go wrong.
