After stopping at the dealer for a slight interior problem I took a drive up the 55 freeway.

Exterior temp at 86; locked in 5th at about 75 mph; light throttle. Near the EGR shutoff temp of 210. Plenty of oil pressure.

I notice giant clouds of soot out the back when I press the pedal slightly. There is a slight rise and I add a bit of throttle. Then there are hugeBANG BANG BANG noises under the hood. Really loud, and the truck stumbles. The dealer says to bring it back in, but I cannot get there right now. I stop and restart and there is no repeat performance after another 20 miles driving on the same road.

Mind you this is still the first tank of fuel! Any ideas what might be going on? Injectors? EGR? Felt like a severe backfire from a gas engine. Ideas?

Frank,

First off since I am new around here let me introduce myself. My name is Dennis and I live near San Diego. I know a little about the Duramax and own both a 01 and 04. I love to FISH.

When my 04 was 3-4 days old it started to act just like yours only before it started to blow the smoke it would rattle like spark knock on a gasser. In the shop with just a few miles over the 500 point and also the first time I had it at highway speeds. Everybody thought it was a bad wire to the #8 cylinder and the dealer spent a lot of days trying to fix it. Still the #8 injector was dumping fuel when ever it wanted to. Next they replaced one of the computers and then another computer. This went on for weeks and then months of driving a rental. Started the lemon law stuff and before it went to the hearing at the BBB Auto Line GM came to the plate and offered to replace the truck. My 01 has had it's share of injector problems but GM has always fixed it at no cost! If you want more details please send me an email and I will call you dlconstruction@cox.net

No replay on this problem, and I am on the second tank of fuel. No resolution either, and still no SES. My wife has the truck today for a full tank of highway driving so she might report back.

Speaking of fuel...

1) Local Walmart had a clearance on Diesel fuel conditioner. So I bought it all, since it was 80% off.

2) Having looked at LOTS of stations the cheapest place in Orange County CA appears to be the Shell at Kramer off the 91 (between the 55 and 57). The local high-volume 76 is at $2.25, but that Shell is at $2.09. Lots of other places are in the $2.33 ranage.

Take it in and have it looked at if for no other reason than getting it documented in GM's system in case something happens down the line that may be related to this event

Mine did it at 440 miles. Dealer can't find a problem, GM Techline has no clue. Engine never throws any codes. Sometimes it smoked but didn't knock; other times it sounded like two cylinders were running backwards...

I'm currently in a rental while they try to figur it out. any help would be great.
