: Speaker Crossover Placement?

Getting everything together to install new speakers; CDT EF-61's, DRT 25 1" Silk Tweeteers, and Satnet 560 Crossover. I am wondering where to put these little crossover boxes. I guess back with the amp makes the most sense. The door is the other option, but that could be hard on them...Thanks for any input.

PB,

I put the crossovers for the front doors underneath the 6.5" driver. It fits nicely and allows me to run just one set of speaker wires from the amp(behind rear seat) to the crossover.

For the rear doors, I mounted the crossovers inside the B Pillar. I think B pillar is the correct term to use. It's the vertical metal part of the truck between the doors in a crew cab. Anyways, I pulled off the plastic piece on the inside to get to the rubber boots that go from the doors to the cab. Near the bottom, I mounted a piece of leftover MDF and screwed the crossover to it. I did this for both driver and passenger doors.

Let me know if you need me to explain any of this better. I mounted all my amps behind the seat back of the rear seat. I wanted to minimize the amount of speaker wire I had to run everywhere. This let me run a single speaker wire from the amp to each crossover location (total of 4 wires instead of 8). Then I ran two speaker wires from each crossover to it's respective driver/tweeter.

Wish you the best of luck. I am using CDT's in the front of my truck and have Elemental Design components in the rear. I never sit back there so I haven't gotten to listen to them very much.... d'oh.

Thanks Dave,

I took a look at the area under the speaker. Looks like I can make some type of plate to put in that area and mount the Xover. I have some thick plastic that should work. What did you use?

As for the speakers: I removed the rubber seal from the back of the old speaker and put in on the back of the CDT. That should isolate the speaker from the door. I guess I'll just use some sheet metal screws to secure it? The OEM have a nifty tab assembly built into the speaker. I'm thinking of ordering some Dynomat for the doors while I'm at it....

Thanks again,,

For the crossovers, I actually just screwed them with sheet metal screws to the metal area just below the 6.5" driver. I checked and there is no interference with the door panel. Also, on both of my sets of crossovers, there was only holes for screws at one end. I put this towards the top. At the bottom, I put a piece of foam with glue on the back. Stuck it to the door so that the crossover would be resting on the foam to help with vibrations.

I would do some sound deadner. I haven't personally done it yet, but I know it never hurts to have it. I am planning to get some myself. Have a look at www.edesignaudio.com (http://www.edesignaudio.com). I am planning to buy their eDead sound deadner for my doors.

Yeah, the factory speaker has that nice tab/hook thing. I just screwed my driver to the door with sheet metal screws. Hope this helps...I'll keep checking this post if there is anything else you need. :)

Thanks Dave,

I just ordered some B-Quit Ultimate deadener, 100sq ft. Might as well do the doors while I've got the panels off. I'll get the floor later. I think I'll just gut the interior and go for it.

Thanks for the inpuy!

Yeah, I can imagine deadening the doors will help and I plan to do it myself. I am not sure if I want to go through the hassle of removing the interior to lay down deadener in the cab. I think the hesitation is partially because I'm tempted to trade my truck for a LBZ. :D

Good luck with your upgrade. Are you only doing the front doors or rears too?

I need to find some coaxials for the rear, but yes, may as well...

crossovers will indeed rust over time if mounted in the doors....
take it from a guy whos been doing car audio installs for 20+ years
the doors are the worst place to mount Xovers..........
You could mount them in the inside door pockets, just drill a hole low in the pocket and run the wires
to the driver while velcro your xover in the door pocket after all is hooked up...

I usually install on the amp rack, assuming you have a large multiple amp system
like me and my bass crazy audio maniacs

Yeah...thanks for the advice. I'll be keeping an eye on my crossovers and see how they fair in the doors. Only the front speakers have them in the doors.

Of course, I trade trucks about every year it seems, so these speakers won't be sitting there very long. :D I plan to pull them and put all the stock stuff back before trading.
