I reciently did a rear brake job on my 1997 Chevrolet K2500 8600 GVW truck. It has the 13 inch rear brakes with a "full floater" rear. I placed a new set of rims and tires on it when done. Shortly after I noitced a vibration in the rear. I checked and found the bearings not adjusted right. I snugged them up but have not lost the vibration.
Since then I have tried two other sets of tires and the old good known rims. It still vibrates. It is felt about 40 miles an hour a little but comes in earnest at about 60-70. I notice that the brake drums act like they are warped, but both are new. When I jack up the rear and run the drive train at speed, the vibration is present. You can actuall see a "wobble" in the rear left wheel and drum. The dealer balanced the driveshaft but this does not help.
I am going nuts and not sure what else it could be. All the u-joints are good and there are no strange noises from the axle. I can't believe I bent an axle shaft with the out of adjustment bearings. Or could I have damages a set of bearings??? Please help or give me something to look at!
1. The tires are new.
2. Rims check out ok. Same vibration with the old tires and the new ones. No balance issues.
3. drive shaft balanced.
4. I rechecked the wheel bearings. Problem started after a brake service. I noted the inner races were "out of place" I reseted them with no change. They were not seated all the way in. one
5. Drums are new. same vibration with old and new ones.
6. I replaced the inner and outer on the left side. No change. Guessed at a bent or distorted bearing. I will now try the right.
It all started after a rear brake service and I drove for about 100 miles with loose wheel bearings. Not sure if I warped them somehow. I also wondered if I could have bent or damaged something in the diferential case???????? What would have caused the races to "creap outward" on the right about 1/16 to 1/8th of an inch? On the left not quite as much...
The vibration is present on a jack with both wheels lifted and run at speed. The wheels seem to hop up and down. It definetly comes from the rear drive train. Feels at times like bad u-joints but the check out.
Could the bearings in the transfer case have gone bad?
No odd noises anywhere
