: Checking air pressure??

Ok, stupid question here. I just bought a 2005 dually and I love it, BUT....I can't figure out how to get to the rear tire valve stems to check the tire pressure!!???

I'm pretty sure I have every air chuck known to man, and none of them will get in there. Both sets of tires have just regular old valve stems, are they supposed to have something different? I can't even get to the inside stem to remove the cap.

Needless to say my 2 minute air pressure check has turned into a major b*tch session.

Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks,
Greg

Use a big truck guage- they have them in Wal mart and any auto parts store.
They have a double head on them set at a 45 degree angle.... use one side to push down on the stem, the other you pull it onto the stem. They are also made with an air filler and guage. Sell for anywhere from $ 12-15.

you may want to stop by your local napa and get a extender or 2 there cheap about 4-6inchs long and most dually wheels have a hole in the center to a extended valve stem.

i can get you a pic of my extender next time i take a wheel of if needed

Sounds to me like someone installed the outside wheel 90degrees off- In other words, is the inboard wheels stem behind the solid section of the outboard wheel?

:exactly: my guess too. Although with 8 lugs it's gonna be 45 degrees off.

You can use a long 3/8 drive extension and get the valve caps off. You put the female end on the valve caps push it on ans turn it off.

That is exactly the case. The inboard stem is behind a solid section. I'm really glad to hear that...when you can't even figure out how to check air pressure you start second guessing yourself...I was about to just sell all my tools and never work an anything again. :D

I do have several of the long dual head gauges and the same type of air chuck....but I couldn't even get it to fit the outboard stem without severley bending the stem.

The stem extender might help once I get the wheels on right, but I guess only on the inboard wheel. An extender on the outboard wheel seem like it wouldn't help much, no?

Thanks for the replys.

Once you orient the outboard wheel correctly, you'll have no trouble checking the pressures with the aforementioned truck type chuck. :)
