: just received my letter of additional coverage from the General
letsgo 06-03-2004, 07:50 AM letter 04039 arrived yesterday stating that I now have additional coverage 320,000Km (200,000miles USA) or 7 yrs on my fuel injectors, this is kind of a blessing, as I just had work done (I think I got the shaft) they were supposed to replace 8 injectores, so I have at least another 260,000 Km for the new or old or whatever injectors to wear out.
good luckEdited by: letsgo
Mackin 06-03-2004, 08:18 AM Is it identical to the one we have here I wonder ??

letsgo 06-03-2004, 09:13 AM Its a letter addressed to me stating that this is not a recall but an extended service to 2001 and 2002 6.6 duramax owners.
the GENERAL acknowledges the fact that there is a problem, relating to the injectors body cracks or ball erosion.
and if you had work done before may 25 2004 and paid cash, there is a reimbursement program, provided GM performed the service, claims must be before May 25 2005.
good luckEdited by: letsgo
Kennedy 06-03-2004, 10:53 AM The one posted is the official Q/A letter sent to GM svc departments in an effort to help them deal with the ensuing barrage of questions that will undoubtedly come from vehicle owners.
GMCSID 06-03-2004, 11:10 AM This should be the letter you get or close to it.
June 2004
Dear General Motors Customer:
As the owner of a 2001 or 2002 model year Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra vehicle, your satisfaction with our product is very important to us.
This letter is intended to make you aware that some 2001-02 model year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicles, equipped with a 6.6L Duramax Diesel engine, may experience vehicle service engine soon (SES) light illumination, low engine power, hard start, and/or fuel in crankcase, requiring injector replacement, as a result of high fuel return rates due to fuel injector body cracks or ball seat erosion.
This is not a recall. Do not take your vehicle to your <Division> dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition as described above.

General Motors is providing owners with additional protection for the fuel injectors. If this condition occurs on your 2001 or 2002 model year Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra vehicle, equipped with a 6.6L Duramax Diesel engine, within 7 years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service or 200,000 miles, whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge. </TD></TR>

You may want to call the service department at your dealer to find out how long they will need to have your vehicle so that you may schedule the appointment at a time that is convenient for you. This will also allow your dealer to order parts if they are not already in stock. Keep this letter with your other important glove box literature for future reference. </TD></TR></T></TABLE>

Heartbeat Hauler 06-03-2004, 01:45 PM Does everyone with an '01 get the same extended warranty or do you have to get the letter?
I have read about the scuttle butt that GM may do this, but this is the first I've read of an actual letter. GM just went up points in my book. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
JP
That's the ticket to shut the dealer up.
rickles04 06-03-2004, 03:08 PM does this count for the 03 also?
Mackin 06-03-2004, 04:01 PM does this count for the 03 also?
As I understand it ,No ....It is primarily for 01 and most 02's ....

Frank Blum 06-03-2004, 05:30 PM Looks like the $100 deductible has been waved also. Later! Frank
CMDMAX 06-03-2004, 07:48 PM I have an 02 and just received the letter.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
VFRRider 06-03-2004, 09:20 PM Didn't know there was any difference in my early build 03 injectors and 02 injectors. Anyone want to chime in with direct knowledge, bought my ride 11/02.
moss022 06-03-2004, 10:13 PM mines an '02, got mine in the mail aswell
biglakedmax 06-03-2004, 10:31 PM Got mine, too. Very nice! My '02 has a build date of 5/02
hdmax 06-03-2004, 11:12 PM Didn't know there was any difference in my early build 03 injectors and 02 injectors. Anyone want to chime in with direct knowledge, bought my ride 11/02. If you have an 03 (don't matter early, mid, or late) You are 100% out of luck at this time as far as getting a letter.
However, GM has stated that they are working with owners on an individual basis. If you haven't had any problems, don't worry so much. Even on the 01-02 trucks there are far less then half that are having trouble. And if you do, then play nice and they may take care of you.
CADman_ks 06-03-2004, 11:26 PM I've read several of these posts now on the extended warranty, and I keep hearing people say "most '02's".
Does anyone know exactly where the cutoff is going to be in '02, if at all?
I have a 6/02 build date, and I have NOT received a letter yet...
Darrin
ConcordMax 06-03-2004, 11:27 PM I got mine in the mail today. I have not had any problems with my truck to date. It has about 23000 Miles on it. I do not know if I am really excited as the rest of you all about GM stepping up to the plate. I plan on keeping my truck alot longer than 7 years. If my injectors go bad will they replace them with the same bad type injector that could go out agian. Don't get me wrong, I love my truck, but sure would love to know our injectors are not a piece of crap.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Unhappy.gif

Mackin 06-04-2004, 06:56 AM Man I just got drafted ,I'm going to injector WAR .....
Thank's SID !!!
Mac http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
GMworldclassmaster 06-04-2004, 12:21 PM I have discussed the injector design with GM engineering, the injectors that they are now releasing have been redesigned internally
Currently there is a national backorder on these injectors, i have a veh thats in the shop (66K miles) we have been waiting on a set of injectors for over 5 days now......so if you have injector problem expect a delay in getting the repairs done and your veh back to you......
Not the dealers fault
P.S. Gm does not want us stock piling the injectors they are about to go on a vin restriction, that means when we order the injectors we have to supply them with the veh. vin number....
letsgo 06-04-2004, 06:44 PM 5 weeks ago I got stuck in Orland Ca. for 10 days getting (I was told) new injectors installed.
In Chico Ca, 20 miles down the road, the Chevy dealer and his mechanic told me they had 3 trucks in his service lot (going on 4 weeks) waiting for 3 sets of new injectors.
not nice.
silverado01 06-05-2004, 12:19 AM My letter also came today. I have over 79,000 miles on my '01 and haven't had any injector problems yet. I sure like the extended warranty though. I did install the Nicktane fuel filter at about 66,000 miles, so I don't expect any problems with the injectors. By the way, my Nicktane filter lasted over 12,000 miles before it had to be changed!
duramaxdiesel 06-05-2004, 12:19 AM I got my letter today too. My injectors and pump were changed less than a year ago so I'm glad I have this "special" coverage.
Nick
blakegeo 06-05-2004, 12:18 PM I got my letter 2 days ago and it has really calmed me down. I, also, gained a lot of respect for the General, particularly after All the problems with my '97 f-250, 5.4l oil leaks and the cracking doors and roof. Ford just dodged the issue. I was getting sick wondering if my injectors would go bad, as I plan to keep the truck for 10 years or so and won't be doing the heavy pulling of my 12,000 lb fifth wheel for about 2 more years on my 2002. It has 26k miles on it, using Delvac 1. Installed a Cat filter pre-OEM at 23, 000 miles and started using Stanadyne Junior supplement in each tank about a month ago. Is there anything that I can do (or shouldn't do) to try to protect these from failing in the future, I'd appreciate your thoughts, very much. Thanks
rtquig 06-05-2004, 02:55 PM Received the letter today. I feel a lot more comfortable knowing they are going with the 7 year/200,000 miles. For a while I thought I'd made a mistake buying this engine, but I can live with it now.
403turbo 06-05-2004, 10:11 PM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifI got mine too!
But I also got an $1100 estimate for rear brakeshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif I got the letter from GM after the estimate so that made me feel better.
All I can say is that I am impressed that the General stepped up and did this. Correct me if I'm wrong but Ford hasn't done this have they? And the powerjoke problems seem to be much worse than the duramax injector issues. Granted Ford has been forced to buy many trucks back but this is will cost GM big bucks and seems like a truley responsible thing to do.
We should all thank the poor slobs that bought the new powerstroke. If ford wasn't getting their butt kicked by bad PR GM probably wouldn't have taken one for the team to capitalize on the opportunity to spread good will about GM customer service. WAY TO GO FORD GUYS http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

mannytranny 06-05-2004, 11:55 PM Where do you find this build date thing?
I got the letter too...And I am still dissapointed. Kinda a game of Russian Roulette with the injectors..........
Cruz_Man 06-06-2004, 09:26 AM I doubt that the general deserves all of the credit here. I bet Bosch is footing alot of the bill here and the general is just passing it on to those he could. Here is how I see what is going to happen in the future. The general is going to continue to collect data on the newer injector design (like they probably do for all parts) and if they see they have a problem with the design they will go to Bosch and say hey we have a problem here and what are you willing to do about it. Bosch my offer reduce parts cost , or even cover a portion of the labor. As far as the past goes I bet it took may hours at the bargening table to with bosch to get the deal that got that allows GM to offer 2000 and 2001 owners an additional 200k miles in warrany.
bigdog 06-06-2004, 10:13 AM I wonder why 03's are not included in the list as well? If they are using the same injectors then aren't they also at risk?

The Original Diesel 06-07-2004, 02:55 PM Ironic thing.............
I got my letter 2 days after I bought my new LLY. The number one reason I bought the LLY was because I was approaching the 100k mark and did not want to fork out the 5k for new injectors once the warranty was up. FWIW I am still on my orginal set of injectors on my 02; juice since day two and no additional filtration http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif.
Oh well I still love drivng this new truckhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
ShumDit 06-08-2004, 01:10 AM I wonder why 03's are not included in the list as well? If they are using the same injectors then aren't they also at risk?
Gamesmanship ~ they've another year to get a handle/smarter on the situation. When your time comes ~ it may be even better.
I knew I was pushing it in getting something w/a new engine ~ I trusted Japanese engineering tho (generally, bugs are worked out before they go into production ~ less so nowadays. Learning from us I guess). But hey, in this case its Bosch. Think everyone is learning from this and thats good. Me thinks that todays internet and forums like this has caught the manufactures attn. Powerful force ~
And I too got onboard today. Feels good sorta ~ but kinda wish there was something more bulletproof than a letter. Like a new design HW and promise of new stds for retail fuel, more availability of bio diesel etc. Its life, will flow ~Edited by: ShumDit
AkDually61 06-08-2004, 11:21 AM OOOPS! posted note on the "HE'S DEAD JIM" thread, got my letter yesterday saying I should schedule a appointment and get them R&R'd. Quandry over doing it now or waiting http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif ? What do you tech's think?
Searay90 06-09-2004, 11:16 AM Got mine too........... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Looks like my 02 is going to be in the family for a long while
bigdog 06-09-2004, 01:35 PM ShumDit,
I hope you are right or atleast they do include 03's on the list as well. If all the pre LLY motors use the same injectors than they should all be covered I'd think..
dmaxscott 06-10-2004, 08:17 AM I just got my letter in the mail also. No injector problems yet and hope none in the future. I just had an injector pump replaced last week.
I like my truck I just wish I got better then 15mpg and 9.5mpg pulling but other then that all is well.
conradv 06-17-2004, 03:54 PM I'll bet that when '03 owners have problems there will be some lawsuits if GM doesn't step up to the plate...
ConcordMax 06-18-2004, 12:08 AM Hey Original Diesel,
You have had your truck for a 100 thousand miles as you state with no problems. I am thinking that really the main cause of all this injector failure stuff is just simply dirty fuel. So if your getting really clean fuel all the time or have extra fuel filtration we all should get a good long life out of any of the injectors. What do you think?
shrubber 06-19-2004, 11:38 PM Got my letter, too! I spent 3 days in Amarillo TX getting two of those rascals replaced! Do you think that I can get reimbursed for the $100 deductable I paid?
patrick 06-20-2004, 11:23 AM we will see with 03. see 01-02 have hodusings fractures under high psi.
03 they are seeinf the cortrol slinoid sticking causing the injector to stay open....
bigdog 06-20-2004, 04:56 PM As someone with an 03 I sure hope they offer us the same warranty on them being they are the same injectors.
Perhaps the reason why 03 trucks are not included at this time is a matter of accounting. When a manufacturer unilaterally extends a warranty, accounting rules require it to record a liability on its books for the anticipated additional warranty work that will occur and that the manufacturer will have to pay for. Obviously, the more trucks they extend the warranty to, the greater the liability they must record.
It would not surprise me, if injectors continue to be a reliability issue, to see the 03 engines also seeing a warranty extension at some point in the future, maybe next year.
bigdog 06-21-2004, 09:33 AM Maybe so, that way they can carry over the costs from year to year??
They can take a lesser "hit" against earnings in any given year by taking several small "hits" spread over several years.
Wall Street is so concerned about small variations in earnings per share from quarter to quarter that corporations like to keep the "hits" against earnings manageable in each year.
Besides, some finance guy in the corporation who doesn't know an injector from an impeller is probably hoping the 03s will not have the same problems, or not have them to the same extent, as the 01-02 models.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif
bigdog 06-22-2004, 09:36 AM That makes sense, hopefully that is what they are doing and will add the 2003 (and 2004's) in time.
