sorry should have been specific.
I have had a constant chirp when engine is cold ( 1st 10- 20 Mins). Dealer replaced idler, tensioner, alternator, belt ( 3 times) and tried moving p.s. pulley in with no luck. They put on a gatorback and all has been good

My 06 has the chirping sound too until it warms up. When I asked the dealer about it they replied they had never heard of that problem before, I'll tell them to try a new belt. Does it need to be a gatorback belt?

not sure if you guys know this but the 06 LLY's have a bulletin for them on the belt squeak when you shut it off. I know this is different from what you are talking about but just thought i'd throw it out there. It's an alternator with a clutch on it. Th LBZ's have them.

I had the same problem and the power steering pump being out of alignment was the issue on it. My dealer also said they had never heard of this and had no bulletins so I emailed him a link to the thread about this.

Search Squeeky belt saga if you want to read the thread on how many people have had this problem.

My LBZ squeaks/chirps everytime I turn it off!! It drives me crazy. It's only got 1500 miles on it!

All diesel's chirp when you shut them down,it's the belt slipping on the pulley's.Diesel's stop instantly.

look at your alternator and see if it has a plastic cover on the front of the pulley. if not then take it in and complain about belt chirp when you shut it down.

" All diesel's chirp when you shut them down,it's the belt slipping on the pulley's.Diesel's stop instantly."

ya, but the new duramax's aren't supposed to with this new updated alternator. it's made a difference on all the ones i've installed.

I never noticed this on my 2005 I just traded in .........after my vacation this next week I will take it in and tell them about it. I will also check the pulleys on the alternators and report back. I'm at work so I can't check it out. Work always gets in the way of things :)

Great post, thank you. Welcome to the board!

I'm headed to Autozone to buy 2 of them if available locally.

When in doubt, always try the GYGB. Crown Vic's have a nasty belt squeak also, and these belts cure that problem as well.

Just looked at both alternators. They just have the black pulleys on them and the visible nut holding them on. No plastic......my truck was built at the end of November last year from what I found out. So if I take it in I will get two new alternators? or just the pulleys put on?
Thanks.

Which alternator option do you have?
Single 105 amp
Dual 105 amp
Single 145 amp

Autobone in Phoenix doesn't carry 4061195.I think that belt is for dual alt,it's long. They carry 116-3/4 & 117-1/2". But the bone heads cant tell you which one is correct unless you bring in the belt."HELLO" bone heads, take your belt off to measure it so we can tell you that we dont have it.

This belt is for a single 145 amp. The factory belt is 3034 mm or 119.45 inches. The gatorback is 3035.3 mm or 119.5 inches.

I see that NAPA has it for $36.09

Subject:Drive Belt Chrip When the Engine is Shut Off - keywords 6.6 accessory alternator engine generator LBZ LLY noise off pulley squeak wear #PIP3772B - (07/17/2006) Models:2006 Chevrolet Express, Kodiak, Silverado

2006 GMC Savana, Sierra, TopKick

Equipped with a 6.6 Duramax Diesel Engine RPO codes LBZ or LLY

The PI was revised to include information on dual alternator systems. Please discard PIP3772A.
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:

(http://service.gm.com/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=1847901&psdid=1233&evc=sm#ss1-1847901)The customer concern will be a accessory drive belt chirp when the engine is shut off. Belt chirp when the engine is shut off has always been a characteristic of the diesel engine. The belt chirp is caused by the high engine compression and the rapid stopping of the crankshaft. Due to a larger/higher output alternator, the belt chirp on a 2006 diesel engine equipped vehicle may be slightly louder than a older model vehicle. Some 2006 diesel engines may already have a clutched alternator pulley to reduce the amount of belt chirp when the engine is shut off.
Recommendation/Instructions:

(http://service.gm.com/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=1847901&psdid=1233&evc=sm#ss2-1847901)If a 2006 diesel engine equipped (LBZ or LLY) vehicle has come to the dealer with a customer concern of a belt chirp when the engine is shut off, and the vehicle does not have a clutched alternator, a clutched alternator can be installed to reduce or eliminate the shut off noise. No special part number or ordering is needed. If the current part number for a new alternator is ordered from GMSPO, a clutched alternator will be shipped.
Note: The clutched pulley alternator is only used on single alternator systems. If the vehicle is equipped with a dual alternator system (RPO code 8X5), the clutched alternator cannot be used.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Can someone post a photo of the updated "clutch alternator"?

~Duramax~
08-26-2006, 11:50 AM
i currently can not but i can explain it. The "old" style you will be able to see the nut that holds the pulley. the "new" style has a plastic cover on the front and no nut visible.

right, kind of. Apparently the chirp is louder on the 06's then previous years so thats the purpose of it. If it's a slight chirp like the 05 and previous then yes, it's your deal. if it's loud, then take it in and have it checked. Maybe it's not functioning properly.

yeah mine sounds like a pair of cat going at it in the morning and as of yesterday just started chriping through out the day!

my lbz makes the same sound when i turn it off. it made it the first time I turned it off and it had 21 miles on it, now I have 5k. I could care less when it makes the sound as long as it happens when i turn it off

My truck chirps and squeels for 15min on cold startup , but I don't have a chirp at shut off.
I seem to have the clutched alternator since there is a blac plastic cover covering the bolt on the face of the pulley.
Did someone here get their dealer to pay for the gator back belt instead of a GM OEM belt?
I think I will try to get a gatorback belt on mine and see what happens.

That sucks , maybe if I bought the gatorback myself they would at least put it on for me without charging me? It would save them from buying a belt ..........

If you buy your own, and have a breaker bar with sockets, it might take you 15 miniutes. Just follow the picture on the radiator support. :)

Good question. I also have the dual alternators. Anyone know the answer? I would have thought that replacing both alternators with clutched alternators would fix the problem.

Also, is there a Gatorback for us dual alternator guys?
