I love having agressive looking tires on my truck but I put on alot of highway miles. In your guys opinions whats a long lasting one that will still look good?

That is the cake and eating it to thing. A really aggressive tire in not going to give you a good rate of wear. The lugs will slap on the pavement, and they squirm when they hit the road and that scrubs off the rubber. If you drive a lot of miles, then I would go with an A/T type tire and not a knobby tire. I can tell you that no matter what anyone else says, mud tires do great in mud and poorly on the road. Not to mention that they drag harder down the road and use more fuel.
If the extra expense is not that big of deal for you, then go for it. You will just be changing the tires a lot more often.

I ran Interco Super Swampers TSL radials 36x14.50R x16.5 LT 10 ply on my last truck 5 years and loved them. They lasted for 40,000 miles, handled good in all conditions and were not very noisy. They were on aluminum rims and were very light for the size of tire. I also got 18 mpg in my old Chevy with a 9" lift and the swampers. I put a rail road spike in one during hunting season, had it patched and never had any other problems. I ran boggers also, but hated them. They weigh way to much and are bias ply which in the winter they are very rough and howl bad. You need to look at the type of driving you do. If you do a lot of off road traveling, then get an agressive tire. If you only go off road 1 or 2 times a month, then an A/T would be better and last longer. Just my 2 cents.

I have 17k miles on my BFG mudders. I would say a little less than 1/2 tread gone but there have been some smokey burnouts :)

Rotate! Rotate! Rotate! I got that from another member and it has definately paid off. The front start cupping after a while. If it gets to bad there is no going back. The tire will have to be replaced.

The tires are relatively quiet and seem to handle very well. With the addition of front and rear sway bars, the beast actually handles very well. The shortcut to the farm has a pretty good stretch of curvy road and it really wants to stick in the corners :thumb:

You know what they say about mud tires - you don't use them very much but when you need them, they are nice to have.

The bad thing about what your looking for is to get milage or of a tire it has to have a fairly hard compound rubber which means more noise, bad wear patterns, and rougher ride over softer tires. I have noticed however that when you have alot of torque which these trucks have even high milege tires dont last long, and this is without ever spinning the tires. My Dualers have I think 60000 mile rating but at about 30000 Im concerned, I havent even so much as whipped my truck around a little after running across a wet gutter but I do get on it frequently on #3 edge once im in about 2nd or 3rd gear. My 70 Z28 displays this as well. I wore out a set of reat tires in about 10000 miles but never spun the rear tires just accelerated hard once I was in a safe gear where I could open the motor up.

Like you, I travel lots of highway between the occasional weekend of mud, rocks, and sand. I have had 3 sets of BFG AT KO 285/75/16, and one set of the older non-KO's on my 99 Suburban. The non-KO's lasted 17K -:t . Great traction):h , burnt off the tread like a racing slick:eek: .
The newer KO's each lasted a minimum of 40K till they needed replaced. One set went 64K, and still had 2/32 when they retired. Replacement was never due to worn out tread, it was usually due to hydroplaning on the highway in Arizona monsoons, lessor traction when in a couple of inches of snow, or due to grinding off a few too many lugs in the rocks and not being able to re-balance them very well. If you keep an eye on rotation/balance, the BFG AT KO has always worn very well for me.
Have to say it, YMMV.

I have run the cooper STT M/T, BFG M/T,super swamper SSR,swamper truxas, etc and almost every tire out there. The BFG M/T and dunlop mud rover lasted the longest for me. The swamper SSR was good too. I think the procomp M/T IS THE WORST P.O.S TIRE EVER MADE!!!!! I wouldn't run them even if they were free!

I run the dayton timerline M/T. They seem to be a good tire. Ive been told they are made by Bridgestone and are american made. They feature a rim guard like the BFG's that I like to help protect the wheel from curb rash.

I'm also running Dayton Timberline MTs and they currently have more than 30K miles on them and still have at least a 1/4" of tread. This truck has seen zero off road since these tires went on and probably at least 15K miles of purely interestate running so I am quite pleased with their mileage. I just wish they made a 17" tire so I could get them again if I get larger wheels. BTW, they are made by Bridgestone/Firestone. If you go to the bridgestone/firestone website, thats where you'll find the Dayton line of tires.

I have the nitto terra grapplers and love em so far. Ive only had them for about 9,0000 miles though. They are wearing fine, in fact they havent worn much at all. Ive also used them for two truck pulls, one of which I won, the other I did well in but no trophy. Good tire and looks good too, IMO.

I had a set of nito terra grapplers on my 2000 2500 gasser and loved the way they performed in snow and mud,the treads clean out very well, and they did not make a lot of noise. However I had them less than two years and less than 30000. I just put on a set of firestone destination mt 265/75R16 due to the fact they are aggressive and I read a survey some where that a lot of people were getting 50000 out of a set. I guess we"ll see.

2 of my buddy's have the terra grapplers and they seem to love them. Mileage wise one of my friends got 25k on first set with a bunch of Cummins burnouts.

I agree! Id like to see them in an 18 or a 20. They are a little noisy, but I like it, just enough to remind you that you have an aggresive tire under your ride.:ro)

I have heard nothing but good things about Toyo M/T's. Mine should be here soon! My buddy has 37's and loves them, great wear and not to loud.

I agree with SSNightmare...I am using the Firestone Destination MT and have been impressed with the wear rate so far. I have 21000 miles on mine and you are hard pressed to tell they are worn.

I need to pick up a tire depth gage so that I can be more accurate with how much wear there really has been. I rotate my tires with each oil change (5000 miles). I think that is key with any MT...and is a good thing to do with any tire. Rotate them regularly and you'll get the longest life outta them.

i have 285/70-16 mickey thompson baja radials and there a pretty damn good tire but when your truck sits for a whial it acts simular to a bias tire really rough ride till the tires get warmed up but in the sand it makes up for the rough ride i have never been stuck in any sand wut so ever or mud for that matter

I was talking to the Cooper dealer yesterday and it sounded like the STT's go pretty fast :( . I had some BFG M/T's and liked them but I ruined them. I think I'll get another set, mainly because they come in 255"s. Otherwise it'd be Toyo M/T's.

Certainly louder than an AT but not as loud as some other MTs I've heard. My bro had some MTRs and these are a fair bit quiter than those. My g/f has some off-brand MT and they are MUCH louder than mine.

If Dayton made more sizes I would consider them again and I don't really care for having mud tires to begin with. So yeah, I've been pleased with them.

I agree with previous posts, a big key is regular and OFTEN rotations. I rotate mine as near to 5000 as I can. I have let them go to 7500 before.

My dad runs hankook mt's and they dont wear near as well as my timberlines. He paid $125 a tire mounted and balanced for 265/75/16 in a 10 ply. I paid $129 (my cost) for the 265/75/16 timberline mt's in a 8 ply (they dont make them in a 10 ply) and mounted and balanced them myself. Its nice being part owners in a tire shop. The hankooks are made in korea, and when new they felt as if you were on a ship and were kinda scary to drive when you would go into corners. I contacted my distributor and he said it was due to it being a soft compound tire and they would eventually come out of it. They came out of it at 5000 miles or so. With less than 20,000 miles they are worse than 1/4 tread. Hes going with timberlines next go around.

Pro comp M/T's a POS??? Not in my book, mine have just over 40K on them with about 9/32 wear left. This is on a CCLB, you know, the lightest truck Chevy makes, pulling a GN trailer all over. Most weight I've had to run for balance is 3.75oz. Not bad for a 35" tire. And I rotate them whenever I feel like it, which isn't much.

40K on a swamper??? Best I've ever seen on any swamper is 25K. Congrats.

It's a toss-up between Baja Claw Radials and MT/R's for me. I've run both, and had success with both, but each had their strong points. I loved the grip and flotation of the Claws in the sand, but their mud performance was horrible in this southern "black mud". In clay they were fair. The MT/R's were horrible in sand, but exceled in mud of all types. Both were GREAT in the rocks! Both lasted seemingly forever (2 years) before I decided to get a new set. They each had at least 1/4" of tread left. I will agree though on any kind of tire you get - ROTATE!

Hello,
Have a '93 6.5 with the NV 4500, a '96 6.5 with the NV 4500, and am driving back from Albuquerque to Portland with a new (20,000 miles) 2005 GMC 6.6 LLY Duramax w/ZF-6 6 speed. (crew cab w/short box, 4X4)

Have gone to a lot of trouble to get a matched set (two pairs) of aluminum wheels, and have Cooper LT 33X12.50X16.5s on both the older trucks. Will put those wheels and tires on the Duramax if at all possible..

They are very quiet, grip very well, can tow huge loads with no issues, and I run them at 50 PSI. I think the mileage is great, wore the first set out on the '93 with about 60,000 miles on them.

Had to do a little trimming on the front bumpers, etc, at the outside, and had to cut and drill and re-rivet the liners a bit at the bottom.

We'll see what it takes on the 6.6. Will report. Try to take some pics also.
Regards,
Joel

I have had a couple sets of BFG MT's with over 40k and alot of smokey burnouts...this time I went with AT's. This will be my last set of AT's they dont have 20k on them and there about 25% left. For some of you guys on the highway there prolly ok but I live in the country, alot of gravel and I hunt alot so alot of going places most people dont try to go. Im considering **** Cepek FC II's this time. Anyone had experience with these??? A friend of mine has had them for a while they are wearing like iron with veary little road noise.

How aggressive are we talking?

SuperSwampers are VERY aggressive however melt like butter once at hwy speeds over long distances. THey make a radial and some other slightly less aggressive tires that do well however.

My vote would be the BFG AT or MT. AT = decent all the way around. I personally like the looks of the MT, however I plan on having a trail rig and don't need big meats on the superduty!

BTW, I've had 2 sets of BFG AT's and both have lasted 60k+

I'm still trying to get rid of my current set, one burn out at a time :D
