Good news guys, the Edge Juice for the LLY is almost here. Have been in contact with their Senior Engineer and they need Beta Testers. I have signed up and my box is in the mail. Rob McPherson is the contact at Edge and he states that they still need more Beta Testers, so anyone that would be interested I'll post his address and phone number. he says that he looks forward from hearing from you guys.

Rob McPherson, Senior Engineer (801) 476-3343 Ex 164, Email: rmcpherson@edgeproducts.com. Ok here is your chance to be first on the block with and Edge Juice for your LLY

From what I understand, the modules probably won't ship until next week. Friday at the earliest is what Rob said yesterday. I called to confirm this afternoon. Either way, sure will be nice to finally get one!

Well, since I just got the okay from Rob, I guess I can let the cat (not the converter) out of the bag.

I've had one for a month now...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

Just got back from Ogden and getting it and the Attitude reflashed for the latest release.

Initial impressions with the first Beta, WOW...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Had a couple of things that concerned me about it among them the EGT's with a stock exhaust. So I put a Banks CAT back system on it. That dropped the EGT's about 125 to 150 degrees F at 70 mph.

The newest version I got today is much smoother than the first and seat of the pants comparison might lead you to believe it's not as strong. But I think that's actually because it's so much smoother on the power application. Max boost is the same between the two. Never did any time runs on it since this is a 3500 DRW and all you racer guys wouldn't be interested in my times, so I don't have any to give you.

So they're getting closer to final release, hang in there guys. You who've managed to get a Beta are going to love it...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

Yes DSTRBD, Rob told me that it would probably ship next week, overnight UPS when it does ship.

Yes Zeeb, Rob also mentioned that it's been used/tested a little by some of the locals there in Utah plus a truck (or two?) from their shop.

What kind of hp/torque increase are we looking at Zeeb? Will it require tranny upgrades?

Zeeb
06-02-2004, 09:41 PM
I've not seen any numbers from Edge, and I don't think you will until they get the final release out. They've sure got a niffty dyno room...

Don't know what kind of dyno they've got, and I'm not really too concerned with the numbers. I can tell you I'm REALLY impressed with the difference it made.

Trans upgrades? Well based on Hasslebachs pics of burned clutches and his never threw a code or limped, I've been trying to make up my mind which way to go. If you're careful with it and don't try anything over level 4 empty or level 2 loaded, it's supposed to be okay.

I've tried level 5 once and the defuel between shifts is really noticeable, but MAN...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

So I've been chasing info on the upgrades and which one for a couple of weeks now. It may not be for everyone, but I'm leaning towards the Suncoast Stage III right now.

Check this thread for pics of the clutches and some of the discussion about trans upgrades:

Those numbers look kind of like a dyno run sheet I saw up there in the control room, but I wasn't sure if that's what they were going to use.

If you think about what the Ally is rated for, even level 1 will put you over the torque rating which IIRC is 680 ft/lbs. Seems like Edge even publishes something to that effect on the LB7's, 900 ft/lbs. in 3rd and 4th, dropping to about 680 in 5th.

Now when you start with 520 on an LB7, even level three is under. But start with 590 and level 1 is over the limit. Now this can vary from truck to truck as the dyno guys have said, but GM didn't do anything to the Ally for increased HP or torque with the LLY. They just used some of the built in reserve it already had, and added the G solenoid for improved ATF cooling at low power settings.

It's a sticky question and one that I'm still not sure about how best to proceed, but if you get the Juice, I'd say you better start tucking away something toward a tranny upgrade...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Got one on the way also, should be here tomorrow. Also ordered a BD torque converter today, and will install it along with my transgo kit. Its going to be tough to just use the lower settings until I get my tranny done. I'm going to be a busy guy for awhile. I haven't even changed my exhaust yet. Ah! Zeeb,

What is the impact on fuel mileage, and at what levels? Also, were you towing or empty.

Thanks,

Zeeb
06-03-2004, 11:33 AM
Bruce,

I've not really done any towing other than the ATV trailer which is only about 2,000 lbs. loaded, an almost non-existent load the the Dmax.

Very little highway driving, mostly just the usual run around stuff and while I've not really driven it hard, I didn't want the Ally to get lazy either while running this test. The truck only has about 1900 miles on it and the mileage figured by hand has gone up from 14.4 to 14.9 running the Edge on level 4.

That could be just breaking in changes, but on level 4? I'd think it would have gone down...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Maybe some of the LB7 guys can chime in here on their experiences, or shortly you'll have some more LLY guys to answer questions...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

So, is the general consensus that a Tq converter and a Transgo kit is all you really need to do (on an unhurt trans) to make it last reliably through level-5 on an otherwise mostly stock truck?

hdmax
06-03-2004, 11:43 AM
The truck only has about 1900 miles on it and the mileage figured by hand has gone up from 14.4 to 14.9 running the Edge on level 4. with that amount of miles on the truck going from 14.4 to 14.9 can not in any way indicate the Juice improving the mileage. (I do not mean that the juice did not help, just that this is no indication) The truck`s mileage should still be getting better due to the engine still breaking in. And 99.9% of the time add ons do not help mileage.

I have 59000 miles on my truck, and mileage jumps around 2-3 mpg from one tank full to the next. Where and how I drive, and conditions all play a Major role.

Zeeb
06-03-2004, 11:48 AM
Mike,

Valid points all, I only tracked it because Edge was interested.

Other than having a general idea of what it's getting for trip planning purposes, I don't really care what it gets for mileage, that's not what I bought it for. The fact that a four ton truck gets as good as it does just blows me away, it's a bunch better than my last truck which was a gasser.Edited by: Zeeb

omniGLH,

The torque converter and transgo kit should hold the juice through level 5 with no problems. I'm probably not going to go too extreme with this truck. My other (2002) would slip the transmission. I want to get a head start on this one. I'm certaintally (sp) not an expert on transmissions though. tpitt

It was a really awkward de-fuel on that 2nd to 3rd shift. Of course that was the first Beta and it's been refined since then, but your Ally's will have to get used to the extra power...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

That is strange about the shipping.

Like Zeeb said, awkward shifting at first. Of course I drive like an idiot so that may have alot to do with it. First two settings are very mild with not much seat of the pants difference. The third setting (Driver) is a big difference. This is the first setting where Alli got upset with me. We have since made up. Great power and very smoothe once she gets used to it. Setting 5 is great. Like the previous 2 settings, Alli got upset, shes got no sense of humor! Under full throttle it will definately buck a bit between shifts, but is expected.

How did Minnesota get delivered before Idaho, I'm only about 500 miles from Ogden???

Overnight freight works in an interesting fashion. No matter where the package starts at, they ship it to the middle of the country, then fly it to the destination.

If you ship a package Red from Tampa FL, to Miami FL, it travels 3,000mi to get there.

Or so I was told.

That's how it works. Bunches of airplanes from small single engine stuff all the way up to heavy jets. It's setup like a bunch of wheel spokes, some of those spokes with more wheels on their ends. Everything is gathered to one central location and sent out again.

Interesting part of that is the founder of FedEX submitted the idea in a paper for a colledge class. The professor grading the paper gave him a "C" with the notation; "Interesting idea but not practical, it'll never work.."

Not sure that's the exact quote, but it gives you the idea.

First impression, WOW, you can really tell that there is a difference in power and my fuel guage shows it also. One thing I did notice was that while gettng on the freeway that it almost sounds like a backfire and stumbles a little while shifting, but I guess thats the defueling feature of the edge. All in all seems like I will like this a lot. How befitting as I was pulling into the garage after my first run, on the radio the song "Bad to the Bone" was playing, how true, how truehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif. If you folk want other Beta Test programs available in the future, you should just bite your tongue for now. IMO.

What I will say, is that the packaging, mechanical design, and instructions are very good. I will dyno the Edge for LLY's, take it to the track, and tow with it, but only report my findings when I get the OK from Edge. I asked before I received it, and was told to not to.

With the TTS, I asked, and was given the OK to post my results without TTS review. I asked before I tested it. Otherwise I wouldn't have posted about it.

Either way, I will report (when allowed) how the Edge for LLY's performed on my truck, be it good or bad. Trust me, my reports on modifications are as accurate as I can make them.

I appreciate your explanation, I was not aware of Edge's request to not mention our beta testing on the "Forum". I had spoken to and had received several E-Mails from Rob and he never mentioned not to post our findings. Now that you have told us why I have no problem in complying with their wishes. I would never do anything that would go against their policies. I had spoken to and had received several E-Mails from Rob and he never mentioned not to post our findings. Now that you have told us why I have no problem in complying with their wishes. I would never do anything that would go against their policies. I want to thank you for your concern and would not want to, in any way, jeapordize any future beta programs on or for "The Diesel Place"

No problem. I'm relaying what Rob told me on the phone before I signed up. I can understand that they don't want reports concerning unexpected glitches to be considered to be indicative of the production release.Edited by: McRat

Has Rob or anyone at Edge given you any kind of date for the final release?

Not trying to ignore you, but if you'll read the thread, you'll see that the Beta testers have been asked not to post about it.

You'll have to wait for the final release, which shouldn't be too much longer, but I don't have a date nor any definitive info for you on that either.

Sorry, but it will be worth the wait...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
