I'm new to diesel world so please bare with me on all my questions through out these posts. I'm considering using amsoil when I switch over to synthetic, but I've been reading and it seems to me that the preferred synthetic is the delvac 1. The tests comparision shows amsoil slightly better. What to do?

My honest opinion? You're not going to go wrong either way. I'm no expert here, and I don't have extensive experience with either brand, but I've done a lot of research on both. They both seem to be very popular among oil afficianodos. You might want to visit www.bobistheoilguy.com (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com) and go to the forum section. For what it's worth, my dad has been using Delvac 1 5-40 in his D-Max for roughly 30,000 miles with excellent results. I've been using Amsoil products in both a high performance Yamaha dirt bike and my Chevy 6.0 gasser with great results as well. Neither one of these engines has ever used any oil since new while using Amsoil. I really like it!

The big difference in the 2 is that Amsoil has a seperate warranty that covers using Amsoil on an extended drain interval.


I'm using Amsoil series 3000 5w-30 and the dual remote filter setup that Amsoil sells for my '03 Dmax. I have added 1 qt iin 8000 miles.


My truck is used mostly around town with occasional trips with a 6k# TT that doesn't feel like it is back there as far as pulling it goes. Couple of thousand more and I'm going to take an oil sample and send off for analysis.


I had a talk with Amsoil tech dept on phone about 5w-30 vs 15w-40, as Amsoil sells both. Tech reccommended 5w-30 for mu usage as long as oil consumption and hot idle oil pressure remained within reason. He felt that the superior film strength and lubricity of the Amsoil 5w-30 over anybody else's 15w-40 combined with the 5w-30s quicker start up lubrication would be best for my use.


Sounded good to me and so far so good. The big picture on this should be more visible when I get that oil analysis.

Where can someone see the warranty about extended drains?

I'm pretty sure it is on the Amsoil corporate web site. I have it in my dealer's stuff at my shop, but not here at home. Also I'm unsure of how to scan and post it here.

Amsoil gives a written warranty that if damage is caused due to oil failure thay will back it up. I've used amsoil in my gassers and have been very happy with them. This is my first diesel so I'm still reading on amsoils diesel products. Their website is very helpful. I'll try to locate their warranty and post it.

i ran the amsoil 15w-40 for quite some time with good results. now i run delvac1. based on george morrison's experince, if i were going to run amsoil i would stick with the 15w-40..

I too would stick with 40w.
