I was just sitting in line at the drive through at In-n-Out Burger and I heard a knock, knock, knock. It was rythymic and consistent. I couldnt tell where it was coming from. After getting out of line I pulled into a parking spot and crawled under the truck. I could not see anything out of the ordinary but when I put my ear close to the bell housing it was almost definitely coming from the torque converter or just behind/in front of it. It is not loud at all, cannot hear it with the radio on. Fluids are at proper levels and temps are normal. It does not sound like a metal on metal ticking noise either. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do or check to make sure something major doesnt unravel?
thanks
Jake
truck drives and shifts normal too, no vibrations either.

That was my initial thought. I just went outside and started the truck and drove around the block. No noise now. I must be trippin'. Or maybe she'll start speaking up again once shes warm. We'll see

I know that some of the tripple disk converters will rattle. I know mine does and it will freak me out when I hear it. I cannot hear it unless I am in a drive through or next to a hard wall. Or if I crawl under the truck.
Hope that helps.

that is comforting. that describes exactly what mine does. and, I cannot hear it unless Im under the truck or like you said, next to a wall or in a narrow alleyway.

still what is it about that converter that clunks?

Well, all of the converter bolts were tight, so its not that. It only makes the knock when its warm, but it definitely is coming from the converter, or right in front of it. So....I am assuming my flexplate is cracked slightly. Unfortunately it is almost impossible to inspect with the tranny in place. Has anyone cracked or broken their flexplate? If so, what power level were you at and what happened, how'd you know it broke?
