: should i buy?
red suburban 08-18-2006, 10:02 PM i need to get something with better fuel economy for college, i'm looking at about a 350-390 mile commute each week between work and school, and i'm not rich. my current suburban was getting 16mpg highway, just put a cool air intake setup on it, so it will hopefully help some, but probably not enough. so i have 2 choices:
1. trade my suburban for my moms jeep wrangler. 97 with the 4 cyl, getting 21-23 highway. possibly sell it and make about 6000 off of it. if i sell it i'm going to get either an 85 toyota 4runner, or a m1008/m1009.
2. buy this 1982 chevy regular cab 2wd diesel. 150,000 miles http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=170019439768&ih=007&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT off of ebay, assuming it stays cheap enough.by the sounds of it the previous owner didnt bleed the fuel system after he changed the filter, from what i've learned from here on the dieselplace. i'm not looking to fix it up, but keep it running good and reliable until at least summer, then maybe pull the 6.2 out, rebuild it or upgrade with a turbo, and drop it in my suburban.
what do yall think i should do? getting the 6.2 would cost me some money in towing fuel mileage, i figure i'll get about 10mpg towing (i have the towing package and 3.73 gears) and it will probably cost me 2-300 bucks in gas. need ideas soon, this truck ends in a few days.
High Sierra 2500 08-18-2006, 10:19 PM Look like a decent old truck.
Beware that the transmission (being a 700R4 with 150K on it) may need work soon. It all depends on how it was treated.
I would say that looks like a decent rig, though... I would recommend going to look at it before purchasing it if at all possible.
red suburban 08-18-2006, 10:31 PM i would go look at it, but its gonna be a long drive and i'll be pushing it to go pick it up. by the sounds of it do you think there is something else wrong with it? or am i most likely right that he just forgot to bleed the fuel lines? if anybody lives near there i would appreciate it if you would swing by it and check it out.
red suburban 08-18-2006, 10:34 PM he says that the tranny shifts good, but 150k miles on a 700r4 is gettin pretty close. if it stays at 400 or below i can get it, might be able to get a loan from the local credit union, i'm aproved for 1500 from them, but i dont want to pay 2 car payments, would probably eliminate the savings in fuel.
tigman 08-18-2006, 10:37 PM That is what you look for they are ready to upgrade the way you want or to drop into your Sub

80K10/6.5TD 08-18-2006, 10:47 PM I hate to say this but if you are going to be driving that many miles per week a truck is not the answer.
I drive about the same per week and fuel costs between 170 - 200 per month depending on how much extra driving is done.
Doing that with a 96 camry 33-35 mpg.
now have 2 diesel pickups sitting in the garage that I can barely afford to drive.
$3.18 for fuel here.

red suburban 08-18-2006, 10:57 PM a bike would be best, but the only one that i can get my parents to agree on is gonna cost me about 160 bucks a month, plus insurance, then gas (but 60+ miles a gallon). the last little gas mileage car out here that i've found was an 86 honda accord, sold for just over 2100 with over 230,000 miles. outrageous, and i cant afford that. i know from my dad that the old 6.2's were capable of some great gas mileage on the highway, his old suburban got 25mpg. considering the difference in weight between a suburban and a regular cab pickup, add an air intake and a larger exhaust, i think 28+ is possible.
red suburban 08-18-2006, 11:00 PM fuel here is down to 2.86 a gallon for gas, 2.91 for diesel. for the suburban thats about 370 a month, for the bike (figured 50 at worst) its 96 dollars a month. my income is 1250 just about a month, so money is tight.
wheres the 2x6 piece off wood holding the bumper on?
looks like the paint is original, and the hood/tailgate is rusted.

Hi ,look at the rear view under the door the brown piece,,, Look at the rear door on the top 2 diff colors
BTW the bumper is not original also and is bend on the rigth side +2 bump in it
Look at my sig, 29 mpg with the right setup small mods 25mpg on wvo but thats fine for me it's FREE and i drive +400 miles a week for under $10.00 of PD

red suburban 08-18-2006, 11:54 PM i see the different paints on the tailgate now, i hadnt looked close enough originally. double check that rear bumper though, check it from the angled view, its rusty, and not original like you said, but no wood, just rust. i'm not looking for a nice looking vehicle, i just need something, that i can afford, that will get over 23 mpg highway. i can get veggy oil from the long john silvers down here, which should help out considerably, i used to do that with my old 89 f250 before i sold it. i just want the truck to be reliable, and easy to work on. i have a set of 32x11.5x15 bfg at's sitting around that i cant put on my suburban (16" rims) that, if i get a diesel pickup/blazer, i could put on it, if that would help my fuel mileage any. the owner of this truck ran it out of fuel, filled it back up, changed the filter, but never bled the line. i figure thats y it wont stay running. if thats it then no big deal. for the batteries i work at sears, so i can test them for free, and if bad get a discount on new batteries. seat, i could probably just set something down to sit on for a while or go by a junk yard and find a different seat. rear bumper, if its just rusty (which it looks to me like it is, but i might be wrong) and obviouslly dented, it doesnt bother me. tailgate, no matter. at the very least i need a vehicle that is simple to fix and reliable until may (when college gets out for summer). if you see anything else in the pics that i've missed please post it, or any views you have of whether or not i should go for it. thats y i posted this here, yall have chevy diesel's, so you know alot more about them than i do, and i'd like to know everyones opinion on this truck before i do anything.
tigman 08-19-2006, 12:23 AM Hi again, If you are willing to put the effort and some $$$ it can be a good buying.
It also have the AC .
IIRC the th700R4 was not avalible on 82 but they give you great millage ;)
The 82 6.2 is equipe with 2 fuel filter ,that can be the probleme.

red suburban 08-19-2006, 12:34 AM what tranny came with it? the th350? what are the downsides of the th350?
tigman 08-19-2006, 12:50 AM Th400 was the std trany for the C/K 1500 serie
No down side known almost bulletproof
The th350 is the LD version of the th400 , if not abused no downside either.
Ed
red suburban 08-19-2006, 01:23 AM i know the th400 didnt have od, did the th350 have od? how else would i be able to tell them apart?
High Sierra 2500 08-19-2006, 09:40 AM It's a 700R4. These trucks didn't come with a 350.
I don't think it'd be a bad truck. I think you are right about what is wrong with the fuel system, but you never know.
I think it is worth more than $0.02... ):h
GMC-YA 08-19-2006, 08:54 PM BUY IT, FOR THAT KIND-A-MONEY I'D BUY IT AND TOW IT A COUPLE HUNDRED MILES NO PROBLEM. IF IT WAS CLOSER TO NY.I'D OUT BID YOU:lol:
red suburban 08-19-2006, 10:51 PM dont get any ideas haha, i've got another couple of days to decide, but most likely i'll be joining the diesel family.
