I have seen that all the frequent members have used aftermarket equipment if thier trucks didn't come with the xm 6 disk cd/am/fm radio. but I've got a friend whos removing his in order to put in an aftermarket with a xm dvd player. What i'd like to know is if my truck came with the steering wheel controls can i simply plug in his xm cd head unit and buy an xm antenna? does anyone have any ideas on this?http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

jsut buy the aftermarket XM..........unless you want to spend an arm and a leg to get a factory unit put in..........here is what you have to purchase

2 harness, 1 digital radio reciever, xm antena.

the oem digital radio receiver $400

harness aprox $350

ant $50

labor to have a tech put it in, due to several programming issuse

PRICELESS

buy the aftermarket

I think you should be able to remove it all. The harness for the DVD player might be tricky. I've never noticed how and where it was run. I'd be up for the project http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big%20Smile.gif It might be hard to find a dealer who knows what they are doing to reprogram.

I think he is saying he can get the factory xm head unit for cheap from a friend, and wants to know if it will just plug right in in place of his factory non xm head unit and if all he needs is a xm antenna.

Maybe just a software update for the computer to run the xm too?

I was wondering the same thing too.

Okay i will re clarify...........the radio.....has to be XM compatible

the digital radio reciever IS the actual XM unit, 2 harnesses, and the ant.

simply....... if your radio is xm compatible and you don't have the digital radio reciever you won't have XM radio...

If the wires are all in factory bundles you might have to cut the ends off and new wire in between. You will have to look at a wiring diagram to confirm that it can be done this way.

The two harness are strictly for the xm, the have harnes grounding cable, diodes and sheilded wires, not advisable to cut connectors.......

I installed a factory XM unit into a truck that didn't have it, For our owner, it was a f#$kin nightmare.....

Max Power

So how did you do it?

GMworldclassmaster
06-02-2004, 12:19 PM
I ordered the 2 harnesses, the ant, the radio i just had to reprogram, and it was an act of congress to get GM to sell us an OEM XM digital radio receiver. oh yeah had to buy the radio receiver mounting bracket also..............i drilled a hole in the roof mounted the ant. installed the 2 harnesses, and the digital radio receiver w/bracket. Then connected to the radio. then i spend two hours argueing with XM about activating the receiver, reason that veh isn't equipt with XM.......In a Nut shell it was a nightmare...

Xm shouldn't have cared if the vehicle was equiped with XM or not. I signed up online and all they ask for is the xm id.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Like I said, I'd still be up for the challenge http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

WAS YOURS FACTORY OR AFTERMARKET.....GM OWNS XM THEY ARE PARTICULAR ABOUT WHAT UNITS THEY WILL ACCEPT...

Max Power
06-02-2004, 01:32 PM
aftermarkey BUT they do not ask what type model or serial # of vehicle it is in when you sign up online.

GMworldclassmaster
06-02-2004, 01:39 PM
YOU HAVE TO GIVE THEM THE SERIAL NUMBER OF THE XM UNIT YOUR PUTTING IN SO THEY CAN ACTIVATE IT......THEY KNOW WHICH ON IS AFTERMARKET AND WHICH ONES ARE OEM...

Max Power
06-02-2004, 01:46 PM
Right but thats it. Just an ID #. So how would they know or care what truck it is in?

GMworldclassmaster

It's a GM/XM policy......if the ID you give them is for an OEM unit they want the vin.........in part to deture thief's from stealing them. and the other part is GM and XM are going to do what ever they want to do...

jjjensen-If you really want XM, the easiest way is with an aftermarket XM tuner like a Pioneer. Then get an interface to control it with your stock HU and an antenna. As far as I know, all of the factory HUs can control an XM unit. It can be done much cheaper and easier than adding a stock unit. The real good thing with the aftermarket one is it can go with you to your next rig...

I have been fighting with my dealer and XM since I got my truck about this. I wanted to add XM to an OEM Head Unit but could not get any answers on what it would take. Damn I am glad this site is here!
