: guttin the intake plenum

I just recently got my 94 back together from a headgasket job and noticed how much "extra metal" resides in the intake plenum. Not much of a job to get off or to gut it but the question is is it worth the hour to do it. let me know whe has done it and what if any gains you had. It looks to me that I would gain some air volume from the job and maybe a pony or two.:ro)

If you've blocked the EGR, it serves no purpose if you otherwise leave the engine alone. Hot-rod it at all and you'll want to remove the webbing as it will be the limiter in airflow. After exhaust (and you will do it, trust me) and intake mods, removing the web will start to matter but fuel will be the limitation. Chip it and that webbing will be like a cork in the intake.

I have a 95 truck, does my plennum have the web?
I just ordered a chip from SS, will I need to open up the plennum?

On my 99 I took a die grinder to the web at the recommendation of John Kennedy while he was doing the Phazer timing gears and before we installed the 4" exhaust and new crossover. It didn't make much difference then, but it was already taken care of when I went to oversize injectors about 6 months later.

hey dieseltuna, we need more info about your truck. what size? which engine: s or f? egr on top of intake?

taking a wild guess from looks, i would say you have a f engine cause it looks like you have a hd truck. if you a f engine then there is no webbing in the intake. but thats just a guess

no the top is clean, no EGR.

then you should have a intake with no webbing. iirc all f engine intakes(no egr) dont have the webbing.

OK - now you have me thinking. I have an "F", but I guess I should check whether or not my intake has the webbing. What's involved in removing the intake? Will I need a new gasket?

Should comes off with 6 bolts, 1 hose clamp (connecting to the turbo) and 2 wire connectors. I would/will put a new gasket in. I think I will only be about 45 minute doing the job including the gutting of the webbing. I will let you guys know the pony difference after this weekend.

Mine has the webbing I have seen it twice but have not taken the time to gut it yet. Hopefully will do so this weekend or next.

I finally found time to gut the intake and the seat of the pants dyno says it was 30 minutes well spent. Noticed right a way with the exhaust seemed to be alittle throatier and on first drive could tell during boost she was getting quite a bit more air. Would have done it long time ago if I would have known/ noticed that it was there during the first IP change.

I used a 3" cut-off wheel and a dremel to clean it up, took less than 30 minutes. I haven't noticed a difference but mine is stock.

Spend the time guys - you will like the result. I noticed a difference when I gutted mine. Since then I recently installed an the"F" engine Intake upper and lower.
Here is a FAQ link that shows you how gut the upper plenum.
