are there any differences between the model years for the 4l80e? i know its been around for a while. i have 05 3/4 ton gasser with the 6.0 and this trans. i was wondering if the older ones that came with the diesels and such were different in any way? when i looked for parts everything was just for the 4l80e no model years or motor combos to choose from. just wanna buy the right stuff

the 4L85e behind the Duramax in the vans is slightly different...I remmeber Mike saying what was different but I forget. SOmething about a bigger input shaft and 1st planetary? :confuzeld:
I think the older 6.5's have the same 4L80 as you do in your '05. AFAIK, the 6.5 was within the 4L80's power input specs "as is"; ie, it didnt have to be "slightly upgraded" like the Duramax van trans. I do not know for sure tho.

There were quite a few different variations of the 4L80E. It came out in 91 and in 93 received an updated wiring harness, and in 97 it received quite a few internal upgrades as well as the tranny cooler lines were relocated to accomadate all of the updates. In 01 (may have been in 9)I think it was it got the solid input shaft. There was also the RV version that had the solid input shaft as well as straight cut gears vs the helical ones in the regular 4L80. The 4L85 has 6 planetary gears vs the 3 of the 80 and I also believe straight cut gears with the solid input shaft.
Please don't quote me on any of my info as I am in NO way a tranny guy.

best bet on the trans pan would be to make sure both years use the same gasket. good starting point anyways.

The '06 4L85 for the Duramax van does not have strait cut gears in the planet. The shafts are hardened.
