: How Long Will You Keep Your Truck?
cargopilot 05-30-2004, 09:43 PM Just curious how long some of you plan on keeping your truck. Especially since we all put alot more money in aftermarket upgrades and the already hefty price tag of these machines. Do you trade out every couple years, trade out to stay in warranty, or drive it till the wheels fall off?
My wife used to get on me about getting a new vehicle every year and a half or so. I think I was going thru a stage where I just didn't have the right vehicle to keep. I had sports cars, light trucks, etc, but now that I have my HD Duramax, I think I'll keep this one for a while.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif I can't imagine what I'd do without it and of course I NEED it to pull 13,000 #'s of 5th wheel.
Polarbear 05-30-2004, 09:48 PM One of my bigger reasons for buying a diesel, was that you can drive them for incredible amt of miles w/proper maintence...My first two pickups 93&94 4.0 rangers were good, but i had enough and wanted something more permanant and useful on the farm....Unless i win money or something happens, this truck is under my influence for a good 5-6 yrs before i think of trading....so far im thinking 5-6yrs wil be no sweat...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Max Power 05-30-2004, 09:51 PM I have never owned one more then a year and half. I think I will keep this one for 2-3 years. Especially if I do the tranny.
Today my thoughts are to wait for the 06. But who knows what tomorrow holds. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif My only concern is that GM is notorious for holding off the diesels and/or HD in the new models.Edited by: Max Power
Zorganov 05-30-2004, 09:52 PM This one's a lifer!! She's my baby!! I might go and buy another one down the road, but this is MY truck and she's staying till I die!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif
sixfoot 05-30-2004, 10:11 PM At least 5 years for me.
wickll 05-30-2004, 10:29 PM Since this is the best truck I have ever owned, I plan on keeping it at least 5-6 years. Depending on how it holds up, I hope to even keep it longer if I can get the 200K plus miles out of it.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Burner 05-30-2004, 10:40 PM I think it depends on how much money you can make? I have driven a 1500 Chevy for 9 years and 500,000 miles. On the other side, I have had 5 trucks in the last 4 years, one was used. Like I said.....MONEY talks and money says 3 years max for most. Then again things change. I might keep this one for 5 years. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

It get's wrecked bad but not totaled..........GONE http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
It becomes a nuisiance to keep getting it repaired.........GONE http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Something much better is offered.........a lot better http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Or I grow tired of it.......... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
But for now, I think I'll have her for a few years to come.

You forgot one, Some offers you way too much money for it. Gone http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
BIGMoe 05-30-2004, 11:19 PM I drove my 76 Chev 3/4 ton Manual Tranny 4X4 for 11 years and 160,000 miles. Then I had a 1989 from 89 to 96, and 98,000 on it. I had a 96 Chevy only kept for 1 1/2 years then the 98 Dodge 5 years and 70.000 miles. I like the Duramax better than I liked any other truck I owned. So hope to keep it for a long time!!!
Max Owner 05-30-2004, 11:22 PM Seven to ten years. These trucks are gettin way to expensive to be buying another one soon. Also, as long as it is a good truck for me.
2MuchFun 05-30-2004, 11:34 PM Although I have alot of faith in this Dmax, I'll only keep it until my extended warrany gets down to about 2-3K (So the next owner gets at least a little peace of mind at time of purchase).
Modern vehicles are just to complicated and expensive when things go wrong; Heck its usually a computer issue that shuts them down and thats big money and I cant even diagnose it.
So Im guessing about 5 years
Camstyn 05-31-2004, 12:14 AM Whatever comes first.. If it becomes a theft recovery, seven years, or 200,000 miles.
turbo 05-31-2004, 01:00 AM I've had my FJ45 LandCruiser for 38 years, my Chevy 3/4 ton pickup for 25 years, and my wifes Chevy Tahoe for 11 years. They are all gasers.
I would expect my 2002 Duramax diesel to last at least 27 years to keep up with my average. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Fireman 05-31-2004, 04:31 AM Forever, hopefully!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif

CRUSHER 05-31-2004, 07:01 AM How long I keep it depends on Chevy's (GM'S) response to injector problems some folks are having. If GM stands behind the MAX then I'll stand behind GM. If not, I'll dump it just before warranty expires and decide what's next. I'm CHEVY TO THE BONE! If Chevy want's to keep my business they'll do the right thing--------------or elsehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif-----------Phil----------(I really LOVE this truck so far !!!!!!!!)
Silveradogs 05-31-2004, 07:02 AM Kept last truck 15 years, still driving my 79 Malibu Wagon.
Only had 5 vehicles since 1975, I guess till the wheels fall off!
rtquig 05-31-2004, 10:07 AM I am hoping to keep it to at least 200,000 miles, unless the injectors become an issue. These trucks are getting too expensive to be trading in every 2-3 years.
TheBac 05-31-2004, 10:14 AM I usually average 5 years per vehicle...but I think Burner said it right, that it depends on the $$; nowadays, who can afford a new vehicle every other year? I figure the body on this truck will go before the engine does, anyhow.
Tom http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Pig.gif
MICKD 05-31-2004, 10:35 AM As long as the truck keeps rolling I'm keeping it! This is the best truck I have owned http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif The most comfortable truck I've driven as well. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Tsckey 05-31-2004, 04:36 PM I kept my old '68 Volvo for 250,000 miles when it was wrecked by a girlfriend. Too bad, it was a good car, she on the other hand was useless. I still miss the car. I kept my Toyota 4Runners about eight years each. No trouble with either of them. At 32,000 miles on the Duramax the novelty has warn off, but I love it more now than ever. I might keep this truck until I drop dead or something really awful happens to it.

Blinky 05-31-2004, 05:41 PM 'till the teenager needs wheels.... Thats about 5 or so years from now.
Aggie91 06-01-2004, 01:47 AM 'till the wheels fall off & I can't glue them back on anymore! I run about 34K miles a year, & I want to see 500K miles out of this truck so, looks like 14+ years!!

flhrciblueice 06-01-2004, 03:24 AM This is the second new vehicle I have ever purchased for myself(first new vehicle was the "other" HDhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif). I have had several vehicles that I purchased used and put hundreds of thousands of miles on them. I will be keeping it for a long time(probably until it craps out--400k+?, hopefully). I am hoping it can last longer than the '69 c10(785k and still going).
packfan 06-01-2004, 09:49 AM 10-12 years I hope, I drive less than 15K/year and tow less than 1K/yr.
I hate car/truck payments!
deadfurrow 06-01-2004, 10:23 AM I've been racking up 60-70,000 miles a year for the past few years, so a diesel was a no-brainer. I figure I'll keep my truck for two years, & sell it while it still has some resale value left. A Duramax with 120,000+ miles will definately hold it's value better than a gasser with that many miles. I just hope GM extends my '04 LB7's warranty as well. That certainly wouldn't hurt it's resale value.
st_pinetree 06-01-2004, 10:40 AM Kept my last GM diesel pickup for 10 years, 185,000 mi. Kept my last ford for 1.5 years, 30k miles. Went back to Chevy so I could keep it around long enough to get it paid for, beyond that?????
hdmax 06-01-2004, 11:37 AM I've had my FJ45 LandCruiser for 38 years, my Chevy 3/4 ton pickup for 25 years, and my wifes Chevy Tahoe for 11 years. They are all gasers.
I would expect my 2002 Duramax diesel to last at least 27 years to keep up with my average. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
I should have went to school with you, I'd have more moneyhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
I have bought brand spankin` new trucks in 77, 79, 83, 87, 89, 93, 97, 02 not to mention the carshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif My truck is coming up on 2 years old (3 model years) I will most likely get a new one in 2-4 years. The average miles on truck at trade in time has been about 200,000 miles, so if I keep with that then I'll have to keep this one for about 5-5 1/2 more years unless I start driving more.
I have kept my wife longer then anything in my lifehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif But she seems to be a keeperhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Colorado Kid 06-01-2004, 12:34 PM Till my 16 year old son wrecks it. He's 6 years old now.
I might keep it longer than that, just retired (sold) the '91 gasser at 215,000 miles. The '96 gasser only has 55,000 miles so maybe the oldest will get to wreck that one instead, and I'll have the D-max until his little brother (currently "twee anna half") gets his license.
I'm seriously hoping GM will build a D-max Suburban/Yukon XL sometime in the next 5 years. If they do I'll buy one to replace my wife's Honda Odyssey and I'll be done car shopping until the little critters are in college (and the third kid hasn't even seen daylight yet.)
Oldman 06-01-2004, 01:59 PM I've had my FJ45 LandCruiser for 38 years,
You've got me beat. I bought my 84 FJ60 new. It's still with me. I'll probably die before it does. My casket will be carried in the Cruiser or my DuraMax. Not sure which, but I expect both of them to be here long after I'm gone!!
ToddMeister 06-01-2004, 03:44 PM I'll be keeping both of mine for a while. Pretty much have them customized the way I want for now. And they're paid for yee haw! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
And the prices of the new ones are enough to scare you off the lots. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
(Been there, done that last weekend)
bob camire 06-05-2004, 09:23 PM My Chevy will be with us for quite some time i presume. Historically ive kept most of my trucks 7 to 10 years and put around 100k on them. I keep them up really well and never have a problem selling them even after that. I like my gms ..seem to be easy to sell
We hope to use this truck to tour the country ..we'll see how she holds up ..I dont think I will ever spend these kind of big$$ on another truck. Who knows, maybe she will last us a lifetime!
wlkjr 06-05-2004, 10:26 PM I keep all my vehicles over 100K. Last two cars right at 300K. I'll keep this truck until it won't pull the travel trailer any longer. Hopefully the rest of my life.
BigdaddyG 06-05-2004, 11:36 PM I an hopoing it lasts me until my youngest is out of high school and maybe collage, so 10-14 years. I hope it will pull my 5th wheel that long. That will be the longest I will have ever owned a vehicle. Previous was 9 years 1989 K1500 with 140,000 miles on it.
Turfmower 06-06-2004, 10:37 AM I'll keep mine till the bolts holding it together rust out and it falls apart in my driveway. The only reason I got a new the duramax is because My 86 was hit by a old lady that ran a red light and bent the truck in to a U
