: Painted front bumper the cheap way looks great!!
Riccas 08-15-2006, 12:35 AM Just came back from my shop with Mike (its123am) after painting my front bumper. I hate the way black looks on white so it had to go.
**I sanded it down with 100 and ended with 220.
**I used Krylon platic paint but thier white just wasn't white enough even after 3 coats.
**I then used the Dupli-color (code 174) to get the bumper the same color as the truck. After 8 coats it looks very nice. Yes i said 8 coats :thumb:
** I finished with 5 coats of clear also Dupli-Color
I wanted to get a nice looking front end. I had it with black so it had to go. I wasn't about to pay anybosy $200 or anything like that to get it white, for that much i could live with black. But for about $15 in paint the bumper looks amazing!!! I did the top cover and it wow what a difference. I also painted the bowtie and my headlight covers to match. I will be painting the bottom valance tomorrow. And my mirrors are coming back from the body shop during the week. (beginnning to wish i did the bumper first, now i wish i didn't spend $200 to have them painted  )
I'll post pics as soon as i am done.:ro)

PRVRT 08-15-2006, 10:40 PM One word of caution: Do not get any type of petrolium product on the new paint. Dupli-Color will come off very easy with solvents, gas, diesel, bug/tar remover, you name it. It will also discolor to a dull yellow eventually.

Even after the layers of clear?? I sanded it down to make adhesion better. I don't think its coming off for nothing. I used bug/tar remover this after noon and nothing happened. Still good. and the clear hasn't even had enough time to fully cure i bet.
Its123am 08-16-2006, 12:39 AM Nah, were good, It didnt come off my grile yet and its been like a month? Something like that.

Adhesion is not the problem. It will stick fine and should not crack or peel. The paint is pretty good, but the clear is usually the problem. Gas for instance will dissolve the clear almost instantly. The problem is that the Dupli-color does not have the hardner added to it like regular automotive paint. If they did add it, it would set up in the can. Automotive paint uses a 2 part clear/hardner that activates when mixed. It will look ok for a while, but cheap is not always better.
Riccas 08-16-2006, 11:39 PM Mirrors go on tomorrow...
Ruben Z 08-17-2006, 02:02 AM If you think your going to like painting your truck parts you may want to invest in a cheap gravity fed Spray gun. Don't need to go all out with a big one, just a little one. Then just order the correct paint and hardener and clearcoat and your good to go painting most things on your truck with great long lasting results for under 300.00 and thats with all the paint.

I'll have to second that. I just did my covers at a garage and they look great. I like yours to. I hope they last a long time. You have to post after your first trip on the highway. :D

lbz492 08-17-2006, 06:09 PM i swaped the door handles from an avalance. i would like to paint the front, rear bumpers, mirrors, and flairs but i havn't.
chevymanss06 08-17-2006, 06:43 PM looks great Riccas, one question for you, do the mirrors still push in and out like normal? I know that they are kind of stiff originally, and with the added paint I could see them being tougher.... :cool2:
yankeeland 08-17-2006, 06:57 PM Looks good:ro)
bricklef 08-17-2006, 10:33 PM Does it scrape the paint off the the part that slides inside the extension of the mirrors? Looks good :ro) Looks like your truck has bloodshot eyes;)

I have not yet pushed them in. I don't know if it will be a problem or not. Most people who have painted have neglected these slide rails for that reason. I however drive 100% of the time with them extended. I don't want to "see what will happen" to my brand new paint so i guess i will have to wait until some idiot decides to play with them in the parking lot somewhere.
My personal opinion would be that i don't think it will be an issue until winter time when sand gets in them. I sanded them down pretty well starting with 400 (ending with 800). I put about 4 coats of primer on them but i sanded it down a lot. When assembling them they slid right into place with little "coaxing" needed.
"Blood-shot eyes"
... i like that. I think i will tell people i push it so hard that that's why them have them.
