Hi,

I'm seeking for information about running the L56 on straight vegetable oil. From what I've seen yet, it should just work fine, provided that the SVO is properly filtered and heated before it enters the injection pump.

But also, the IP seems to be somewhat weak, so I'm afraid it might go out once it has to deal with SVO. It has about 151000 km/94000 miles on it, with the PMD replaced by a new one, sitting on an FSD-cooler now.

In case the IP goes out, could it be replaced by a mechanical pump?

As I'm living in Germany, it is very hard to get spare parts for and any information about my 96 Tahoe (K1500, 4wd). Prices for parts here are about twice as much as you seem to pay in the US ...

Does replacing the OEM paper air filter by a K&N filter have any noticeably effect? I've been using K&Ns on some of my previous cars and found them to be a very worthwhile improvement. But I've no idea if they might be similarly advantageous on a diesel engine.

i think that the k&n is a good investment for the 6.5. i deffinatly could feel the difference in my 97.

Thanks, that's nice to hear :) I've been thinking that I'd like to have a bit more power when going up steep hills. However, the more I drive it, the better it runs ...

And I've been reading here about removing an intake restriction and plugging something like a muffler at the charger. Tomorrow, I'll look into that at my car, as I'd like to hear the whine of the turbo.

I would be leary of running the k&n filter. It lets alot of dirt thru it. I would go with a aFe filter- it is like the K&n but has 4 layers of cotton gauze verses the 2 of k&n. The aFe is a great filter and some testing I read says that it keep the intake clean where the K&N was letting in particulates.

Thanks,

That has never been proven and is just a rumor.

Changing to a mechanical pump is expensive and a lot of work. The transmission is controlled with the same computer as the electronic pump and won't work with it missing.

I think you can get an aftermarket computer for the transmission but they cost $1000+

Tony, thanks for the warning! The K&N letting too much through was some concern, so I'll back off.

What's the best filter to use? The aFe, or are others available?

The OEM filters seem to be of a very good quality. Maybe I should rather stick to them?

Whatnot, thanks for the info!

So I will have to stay with the original pump ... What do you pay in the US to get a replacement in case the pump fails? I've seen a shop offering a replacement, including work, for EUR 2500. That seems very much overly expensive; seems that the pumps cost something about $350 new?

I ran a K&N for a few thousand miles and when I 1st read about the dirt I removed the intake duct and there was a gritty buildup on the tube. I switched back to paper Wix and it's clean.
I ran K&N for years and never knew

Olee,

Original pump is over $1000 not $350. Getting one rebuilt costs around $800-1000 in US $.

I am not sure if this place ships out of the country but he is a very nice guy and I have only heard good things about him: http://www.accuratediesel.com

When I changed my pump, it took about 6 hours and I had never done it before.

Joey D, was that on your '98? If it was a different truck with the old flat filter, they had a problem with not sealing at the edges of the filter.Edited by: whatnot

Same experience with a K&N in my truck. Tossed the K&N in the trash can, and besides, I dyno'd with and without the K&N, and no change in hp. I should have spent that money on beerhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif.

Hi all,

thank you for your input on the filters and on the pump :)

Is nobody actually running on vegetable oil?
