What kind of rear differential does the 04.5 Dodge use. Someone was saying that it's not a Dana anymore. Thinking about changing fluid in the rear and switching to Mag-Hytec. Should I use Redline fluid or another brand?

It's an AAM 11.5 inch. Dana is out

Use your favorite synthetic gear oil, mine is Mobil 1.

Mobil 1, Royal Purple and Redline are excellent full synthetic gear lubes. Use 75w90

No friction modifiers (limited slip additive) is needed for the Anti-Spin option.

Looking foward to installing the Mag-hytec. Did anyone use the same OEM gasket or did you go to the stealer and get a new one?

Mag comes with an o-ring. I take the old cover, put all the old bolts in a ziplok bag then I zip tie the bag and the gasket to the old cover and put the whole shebangy away. The old gasket is a very good reusable stiff rubber gasket. You want to keep it.

Check out the PML diff covers at www.yourcovers.com (http://www.yourcovers.com) very simple cover uses all the factory bolts and the factory gasket. Adds 1 quart of capacity. I have one on my truck.

The Mag is the Cadillac of covers. They supply you with all stainless hardware. But its nice to choose if your finances and/or preferences lead you to a less expensive cover. The factory gasket is great so that really takes away the advantage of the Mag's o-ring feature. Mag hold a couple more quarts that the PML and has two magnets, a dip stick, a temp probe port and a bottom drain.Edited by: hoot

I have wanted a replacement cover for a long time the reason I did not get the Mag was not price but design. A couple things I do not like about the Mag is that they sold the covers for the Dodge trucks for about a year without realizing the O ring did not match on the housing and the fact that it does not use all the factory bolts. It's a good cover but I do not think it is any better than the PML. It's just a piece of sand cast aluminum. I have also heard people say there is interference with the spare tire because the Mag is so deep when the truck loaded down. Mine holds just under 5 quarts now, how much does the Mag hold?

You are correct they did a bad number telling Dodge owners the older cover would work. I am using my Dmax cover on my Dodge but I recut the o-ring groove. Seals dry as a bone. The upper an lower bolts aren't used on the Dmax or the Dodge. The drain plug takes the place at the bottom and a reinforcement rib eliminates one at the top. The cover is so thick you don't need those bolts. The Mag hold 7 quarts. I have no interference with the spare, my 5" exhaust or the airhorns.
