Once you "chip" both of these engines, does the LLY still have an advantage?
Are there other reasons to get an LLY besides the performance benefits, such as more reliable, etc.?
I'm asking because I'm considering a used D-Max with 15,000 miles on it. It's an LB7 at a very good price, but I need to do some more research as to why the guy traded it in.
One thing I really like about the LLY is the factory integrated high idle which I plan to use a lot.

Well the 02 and 01 lb7 have a 200k/7 year injector warranty and NO egr or cat converter. I am a big fan of keeping it simple.
Since the programmer/modules are just starting to show up with most of the manufacturers now running Betas, it's tough to compare the way you'd like right now.
The LLY has a number of changes designed to help it meet the new Federal emission standards that went into effect on 01-01-04, as well as some changes to the heads, injectors, turbos, glow plugs, trans cooling and even the ECM computer for it is completely different, which is most of what's taking the performance upgrade guys so long.
The jury will be out on the reliability for awhile as well since changes to any engine can result in some unforseen problems. So far there have been a couple of reports about problems with them, but who knows if that's representitive of the the engine changes or just common manufacturing glitches. Too early to tell.
As far as the factory integrated high idle, you don't get to choose exactly when it works. You can disable it, but it will only engage when the outside air temperature is below 32 degrees F, in Park, with the emergency brake set.

When I bought my Duramax, I wanted the LB7 not the LLY. Diesel Techs LLY runs every bit as good on his 50 hp program as mine did on the 80 hp program. It was interesting watching his computer program how he is able to control turbo on the LLY. His LLY program is as smooth as glass. I am happy with my choice in getting LB7. I love my Duramax.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Get the vin, post it in the Tech's section and see if someone can pull up the records for dealer work performed on the vehicle you're looking at.

Thanks guys. I want to be able to high idle my truck on demand, so I'm not so sure I'll be happy with just the factory LLY setup. Has anybody put in a manual override to make the LLY's factory system high idle on demand?
