I am in the purely hypothetical stages of this but want to know what you think. I have seen turbin Doc's auxillary trans cooler setup and have considered doing this in the future. What I was wondering is if I can bypass the old factory trans cooler making it available to use it for oil cooling?

Does trans fluid break down oil? ie would I have to have the cooler flushed throughly by a professional because of possible leftover residue? Also, Is this a good idea in general because if (for what ever reason) the electric fans on the new trans cooler quit working would I be in trouble because of lack of airflow in new location?

I wouldn't eliminate the factory cooler, I still have mine, did your truck not come with a engine oil cooler, if it didn't I'd get a junkyard one, or buy a one from Greg www.lubespecialist.com

It came with a factory oil cooler but I figured with the additional trans cooler, the factory trans cooler wouldn't be of much help. And 2 oil coolers beats one especially if you dont have to find a spot to add one in.

Engine and transmission coolers are not identical in flow rate and thermal transfer specs.

The passages and diffusers in the trans oil cooler are more restrictive than in the engine oil cooler.

If you have the tube\fin type, the diffusers are spiral inserts that spin the fluid in the passages, ensuring that all the oil comes in direct contact with the inner tubing surfaces.

If you have the plate\plate style, the extruded passages between the plates do the same thing.

Engine oil coolers are for engines, trans fluid coolers are for transmissions - do not mix them.

Most are made by Modine in Canada - even the aftermarket offerings such as b&m, transgo, borg-warner, etc.

Mine is thermostat controlled, and the fan trans cooler doesn't come on unless it's hot outside, in traffic low flow across, the trans cooler, and when towing heavy. Factory cooler does a good job, but because of weight I tow I need just that little bit more, of course lower trans temps lowers everthing else radiator isn't working as hard to dissipate the trans heat, so it does a better job of keeping the engine coolant temp down.

Sorry TD. I didn't see that part about buying a junkyard oil cooler. Had wondered but didn't see it in the earlier post.

gmctd provided the reasons to not use the trans cooler and TD said to not bypass the origional cooler so I probably wont. Back to the drawing board I guess. Thanks to the both of you.
