: 6.5 TD To Replace 6.2 N/A
DuramaxC20 08-13-2006, 10:38 PM Since the Duramax Swap would be expensive and time consuming... I was thinking about a Plan B incase the Duramax Swap didnt pan out... What would it take to get a 6.5 TD to fit and run? Also, it would be more of a Tower/Hauler... What kind of power could I get with a Turbo Upgrade, 4 Inch Exhaust or should I stay with 3.5, I dont know if they would respond like a Duramax to 4 Inch... Chip or ECU upgrade, fuel system upgrades... Would I make some decent power with the 6.5 TD... I did a search for 6.5 to replace 6.2 but was unsucessful... Thanks guys!
gmctd 08-13-2006, 11:01 PM '93 6.5LTD with mech DB2-4911 Inj Pump - bolt it up to the T400, connect the fuel lines, hook up the throttle cable, hook up the Ign wire to the Fuel Shut Off solenoid, hook up the starter wires, and go.
Don't ferget to do something special with the power brake booster and yer sig........
DuramaxC20 08-14-2006, 09:36 PM Thanks man... Sounds alot easier than the Duramax Swap... What can I make Power Wise while being reliable
4DR4X4 08-14-2006, 10:17 PM you'll have to do a custom downpipe using the factory exhaust and turbo, and if you have a/c you'll have to do the custom s10 ac box.
gmctd 08-14-2006, 10:27 PM Intermittently, 180-190oem hp without a charge-air cooler - add a big air-to-air cooler for about that, up to 215, sustained if you turn up the pump
Drop in some 18:1 pistons, balance the rotating assy, do splayed mains, add the '98-up heads with the '97 cooling upgrades, 4" exhaust, Holset HX-35 turbo and the c-a cooler - you should be good for around 330hp, sustained.
Play around with a few of the Holset turbos to free up the exhaust, probably 350hp.
Talk to Matt at peninsular about the pistons and any injector upgrade - he's built tens-of-thousands of the hi-perf GM Diesels for marine, and off- and on-road use, and talk to Bill Heath about his 560hp twin-turbo quarter-mile 6.2, back in the early nineties, back when most people coudn't even spell Diesel.
Talk to ronnie joe or John Kennedy about the splayed mains machinework
All-in-all, it'll be less expense than a D-Max conversion.
And, above all, don't listen to anyone but those guys about a camshaft upgrade - that'll save you a lot of grief.
chrisk1500 08-15-2006, 09:56 AM Here is another question....
Is the chip for an 18:1 any different than a chip for a stock compression truck? (I would assume so - but if they aren't it will change my method of attack on this truck)...
gmctd 08-15-2006, 01:02 PM The chip sets up the injection parameters - fuel rate and timing - don't care about the c.r.
Guipo 08-15-2006, 02:02 PM I just put a 93 6.5 in my 85. Its really nice sounding. I havent gotton a road test yet, but its a fairly simple swap. Everything works really well, and there are no real electronics to worry about. You do need to have a custom exaust set up however, since the standard downpipe wont fit our frame.
I have alot of the turbo stuff you'd need for sale if you want to go this route. The wife's making me put it on ebay soon though. :)

DuramaxC20 08-15-2006, 09:01 PM Thanks guys for the Info! Sounds like the 6.5 is the way to go... Just one more question, do the 6.5s whistle like the Powerstrokes and Cummins?
4DR4X4 08-15-2006, 09:04 PM its got a turbo, so yes it can whistle. just need to make sure theres no silencer ring inside the turbo inlet, and run a large cone filter on it.

Ok....just wondered if a lower compression 'chip' would be able to dump more fuel than a stock cr...
Thanks gmctd...
gmctd 08-15-2006, 10:44 PM May require rotating the Inj Pump a little, but afaik no programmer has a program specific to the 18:1 breed.
It would mostly address cold starting - glow duration, fuel rate and timing.

My friend has a 1998 Ford F-250 with 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel... Its all stock with just a 3 Inch Downpipe and 4 Inch Exhaust and it whistles like crazy and still has stock Intake and Filter... Thanks for all the help guys!
