: I love this website
For not putting out BS like this.....
"I spoke with the folks several months ago (who are in charge) about cracked LB7 injector housings. GM was quick to identify the problem, and Bosch was immediately brought in to evaluate it. Bosch (I'm told) changed the design and/or manufacturing method to correct it. All this happened in a short time frame, and I'm told that a somewhat narrow production window was affected.

I guess we'll never be considered "friendly" ......

MAC we are too friendly. That's why we're gone. Nick got the boot recently for simply posting a link to here as an answer to a post.
This site allows links to there.
He is soooo meanEdited by: hoot
Hound 05-29-2004, 04:56 PM There aren't a heck of a lot of useful posts over there anymore anyways. Somehow I think their politics and censorship directly contributed to the demise of that site.
Mackin 05-29-2004, 04:56 PM Of course we are .... Good OLE Jim doesn't see it that way ....
We've extended the handshake more then once ... We aren't useful .... http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif

OC_DMAX 05-29-2004, 07:08 PM MorePower was answering a question that I asked both on The Diesel Place and on The Diesel Page with regard to Injector Body Cracks. MorePower is actually the only person that supplied an answer. Give credit where credit is due. So while the answer provided has a GM marketing twist to it, given connections he has to GM I can understand the wording. I actually was reasonably satisfied with the answer.
More importantly, at least now everyone understands there are two problems with the early injectors. Each of us can possibly influence one of the failure modes (ball seat erosion) but probably not the other (cracking injector bodies)
So given MP's answer, we can only speculate about the timeframe. So I will give it a try. I suspect it took GM at least the 2001 model year to determine they really had a problem with Injector Body Cracks and Ball Seat erosion. They would need a statistically significant number of injector failures to create some attention to the problem and it takes time/mileage for those to occur. It would take Bosch a period of time to perform a redesign and then qualify this redesign before placing it into manufacturing. Given the fact that there is at least one truck that was built in June, '02 (Abear's) and his is involved in the Special Notice, then most likely the injectors changed sometime after that.
My point is that statement was GM talking. It gives you the impression that GM has it fixed and the impression that MP believes it and stands behind it. I made that mistake a few times too many. I remember early on when they were having high pressure pump failures. Heck even the Power Tour truck waisted a pump while it was out showing off. GM seems to have that handled and not a peep from Jim "In the Know" about it. You have to be careful with inside info, where it comes from and who is presenting it. To me the site is a puppet.
If anybody gets credit it's JK coming right in and telling it like it is.... the reason many of us are no longer there.
I guess they figure sooner or later the old crows will be long gone and the new members will "freshen" the place up. Not allowing links to here or private messenging is part of their tactics. It's to the point of sillyness. Sorry I started this up again but we are so far past that statement that I had to point it out.
They still have the article about the LLY that states that the turbo cooling only cirulates when the engine is cold and stops when the engine gets hot.Edited by: hoot
OC_DMAX 05-29-2004, 08:00 PM Hoot, I understand your perspective on the issues. What I don't understand is the reluctance on The Diesel Page to allow people to type in links to here (as long as those links to here are used in a positive nature). Maybe someday.
As far as fixing the injector problem on the Duramax engines (whether LLY or LB7), when there are a minimal number of failures then the injectors are fixed. Until that time arrives, there are still issues with them. (Note: I still see posts where LLY's have failed injectors, so while the situation may have improved(?), it is not fixed just yet!) On this point, GM needs to restore the credibility of the DMAX injection system reliability (something like guilty until proven fixed). That is the power of these forums (all products, just not diesel trucks). It may take a while to get through all the BS, but eventually issues come out about products. Its really good for the consumer like you and I.
Regards,
Alan
Well said Alan and it's us out here in the trenches that deal with the products day in and day out and put up with excuses from dealers and zero answers from GM.
I love this place... for the info and participation we get from the techs on here and the openess of it all!
Ray403Dmax 05-29-2004, 09:40 PM Rather than wait for previous model year design faliures to occur, GM can and does determine failures by accelerated life cycle testing. Of course, first the problem needs to be identified. Hopefully that's the case with Dmax injectors. As to why LLY injectors may still have a problem, it sure doesn't add up for a company that has their proverbial act together.
