: Cow Patty Delete (!Cow Patty)
Bersaglieri 08-13-2006, 11:50 AM I just wanted to drop in with a few thoughts. When I first looked at the air intake system I knew the resonator had to go. My 1994 Z28 had one and it was nicknamed the "Donkey Dong" due to its enlongated Donkey genitalia resemblance.
I'd like to suggest that the 6.6L Resonator that covers part of the engine be nicknamed the Cow Patty. On www.camaroz28.com (http://www.camaroz28.com) which is 90% a 1992-1997 LT1/LT4 350ci F-body site, ! would equal delete saving a bit of typing. For instance my Z28 has !cat, !EGR, !AIR, !donkey dong, etc.
Just wanted to see if this might catch on, long live the !Cow Patty.
One that might be commonly used would be !muffler too.

Dmax Tim 08-13-2006, 04:41 PM do u realize u lose 50-75 hp getting rid of the cowpatty?
unless u can put on 13 stickers, a wing and a fart can you'll never get that power loss back.
I just can't aford to lose that much power.
:joke:
CottonWoodBlues 08-13-2006, 08:17 PM :funnypost But I like the nickname for the resonater, Dustin.
CWB.
Bersaglieri 08-15-2006, 02:30 PM Thanks guys. Being country the name just presented itself.
I completely understand the ricer BS. I've even been shown altenators that were supposedly superchargers on Cavy's.
I think I'll just save the trouble and get a CAI soon. Already did the !muffler mod and found a 4" stainless turbo back exhaust over 50% off at Summit last night. Its nice to have one 30 minutes away.

Unit453 08-15-2006, 02:38 PM Yeah the resonators on the B-body LT-1's were called "home plates." They looked exactly like a home plate. Of course mine wasnt on there long.

And removing the Helmholtz resonator from your Dmax will have the same effect as it did for the LT1, absolutely nothing, except add little more noise! There is very little, if any power to be gained by replacing the entire OEM intake setup with an aftermarket unit like an AFE stage 2, so why would anyone expect to see or feel a gain in power by just removing the intake resonator??
Bersaglieri 08-16-2006, 08:44 AM Is that in fact true that something like a Banks or Volant CAI kit would have no gain over my stock airbox system with a K&N Filter element and large wholes drilled into the front/bottom? [Previous owner did this]
My sisters BF threw a Banks CAI kit on his LB7 and they both vouched for power gain.
I went the other end first, right now I have the 4" SS "downpipe on the truck and I'll probably just throw a turn down on it until I get some SS parts to delete the muffler from this Summit kit. Sounds wicked as hell. I think it runs much better, but then again I only have had the truck 5-6 days. I'm sure the 168,000 mile stock muffler was clogged with plenty of crap.

Brennan monster 08-16-2006, 10:29 PM Seems to me that somebody would have settled this age old debate about the resonator, soooo many opinions, no proof....has anybody done this yet???? Just curious cause if it helps I'll ditch the "cow patty" in a second
nwpadmax 08-16-2006, 11:23 PM The fact that it's so controversial, should be your sign.

I have not seen any evidence that replacing the 2006 LBZ/LLY air intake with any aftermarket unit improves anything other than the bottom line for the aftermarket company. Maybe at the racetrack while running all out, with tons of power mods that would drastically increase the air requirements of the engine you might expect to see some gains, but I haven't seen any evidence for a relatively stock truck. Also keep in mind that a lot of times increased air flow goes along with less fltration (Not good for the engine).
Independent air cleaner test results that were coordinated by one of the members here (SPICER), about a year ago show that the OEM air cleaner on the pre 2006 Duramax gave the best results when compared to several aftermarket units, including K&N. The 2006 intake system is a better system that previous models. So I would save my money and spend it on something with a proven track record, perhaps a bypass oil filter or an auxiliary fuel filter to improve engine durability.
Bersaglieri 08-17-2006, 10:20 AM Its a "merely seat of the pants" butt dyno gain. I guess they make and sell them for no reason, then again dyno's dont always tell the real story. Everyone knows the inaccuracy from dyno to dyno, air temp, altitude, roller weight, etc, etc. I calculate gains at the track, where it's worth more than just ink and paper. Of course getting colder air wouldnt help either right?
A CAI kit would hardly be the end all for my modding, but a bridge to bigger and better things. I know I'm going to need one to supply air for 400, 500, 600, 700 HP and up. Or is the stock box plenty for that too or just stock?

ratlover 08-17-2006, 10:48 AM Same day back to back testing at the track has shown me 0 gain on a switch from a stage 2 afe intake to a stock swishcheesed box with a ACdelco filter(430ish RWHP). Same day, same truck back to back dyno testing showed about 15 HP or so though on a 500HP truck(could have been the aftermarket intake sped up spool up so this is why the gain showed) I also saw a handfull of HP difference that was in the range of dyno run accuracy by running the stock air box with no filter compared to stock box with filter.
Aftermarket intake companies make 90% of thier money by selling people something that makes more noise for very little gain in HP. 90% of the people out there arnt looking for every last HP.
If someone knows how to run a dyno and you use it in a controlled manner to test different products it can tell you a good story. Same day, same truck, same everything.
RayMich 08-18-2006, 10:05 AM Thanks, Philip :)

I removed the OEM paper element from my swiss cheesed OEM air box while doing some back to back testing on a Dynojet back in Febuary, no gains what so ever, as a matter of fact I lost 2-3hp at various points across the RPM range. That particular day I layed down 503/1005
sweetdiesel 08-18-2006, 06:42 PM the best point ive ever saw on the resonator is if gm didnt think we needed it they wouldnt put it on,,just like the hood light and the key in the passenger door, made sense to me i took it off on my lb7 and have it on on my lly i dont think you gain any power having it off but who knows you would have to dyno it
anyone ever thought of takeing it off and adding another air cleaner for more air the one on my quad would slip right over the hole for the resonator
just wouldnt be able to close the hood...lol
i do however like the looks of it off but gm didnt...that a warrenty violation you have power modifiers on this truck!!!!
