:help:
As you may recall, I have had many problems with my AC. I recently switched out the cycling switch thinking that is why my AC would stop working. It had been doing good for the first day after the fix, but not all that unusual though. Yesterday during a trip in 100* my AC STOPPED all together. -:t It was friggin HOT! It would start back up and @ 5 minutes later it would stop for a long time. I stopped at a mechanics shop and he would not be able to look at it. I got back on the road and it worked well for the rest of my trip.
Any ideas on the culprit???????????

Sounds like the clutch may be slipping. My Grand Am does the exact same thing. When it is cool, it works fine. When it gets 95*+ it will work until you shut off the engine to go into a store, when I come back out and start it, it will not work again until it cools down. It does have 165K on it, so maybe I need to just change the clutch. When yours stops working, watch the clutch and see if it is engaging. If it is engaging, but not turning, then it is slipping. Takes 2 people, one to turn the a/c on/off, and the other to watch the clutch. Make sure it is clean and no oil is pressent. If there is some oil on the clutch, that will cause it to slip. Clean it with some carb cleaner. If the oil returns and it still slips, the seal is going bad in the pump.

Where is the clutch at? On the compressor?
Thanks Ben

Mine did the same thing a couple of years ago. The AC would work fine for a little while then it would stop working and then start working again. This went on and on. I went to the dealer and all they said was "that's how these trucks work".
I went to an AC specialist and the guy told me it was the AC clutch. He showed me that sometimes the clutch would engage and suddenly stop. Then he would tap on it with a rubber hammer (while the motor was running) and the clutch would engage. Unfortunately, you can't just change out the clutch on these engines, so I had the whole compressor replaced. It wasn't cheap, but it solved the problem.
Good luck!

Thanks alot captain. I already knew I had to replace the compressor some day since I did have some metal shavings in the orifice tube.
