: little hesitation (buck) at low rpm's
Brooklyn tow 08-11-2006, 07:42 PM hey people, brand new to this site, any way I'm a tow guy in Brooklyn NY, I run a 96.5 6.5td anyone ever experience, from stop when I start to accelerate little dead spots, then I push down on the gas pedal and she smooths right out of it...........thanks, Louis
schiker 08-12-2006, 07:03 PM If I understand you correctly. What exactly is truck. I can get a buck, skip, jerk, and hop at idle or just off idle 2nd gear driving slow through parking lot. I think its just normal fly by wire ECM trying to fiqure out how much fuel to keep smooth engine speed with light varing load low rpm. Then turns into a little rear leaf spring wrap up and roll forward to diesel compression braking. A little embarrasing looks like I can't drive a truck. I just push clutch in pat accelerator and ease out clutch to start over. Heard other manual trannys with similar complaint not as common on Auto's I don't think.
Also barely off idle no load the ECM will overide pedal and try to return to idle again its fly by wire controls. Try and hold say 900 rpm with right foot and see what fly by wire feels like.
Post back if you think its something other.
DieselDave16 08-12-2006, 07:06 PM What kind of truck do you have Brooklyn? It may be an air in fuel issue, but we need more info in order to help you help us diagnose
Brooklyn tow 08-12-2006, 07:21 PM ok.... say your stopped at a traffic light... light turns green, just as i am starting to accelerate(from 0 to 6 or 700 rpm's) it starts to hesitate untill I push a little harder (900 to 1500 rpm's) and it smooths out, no more hesitation........ sorry if I wasn't clear..... also we are talking about a 96 chevy Silverado 3500HD 6.5TD dual wheel (Dynamic back wrecker) Thanks, Louis
Brooklyn tow 08-12-2006, 07:34 PM Thanks....hope you can help....................Louis
DieselDave16 08-12-2006, 07:38 PM Since you know cars pretty well, I assume, being a wrecker, does it feel like you nee spark plug wires? Is it that kind of hesitation? Like a cough? Or is it like a complete loss of power?
DieselDave16 08-12-2006, 07:44 PM Never mind that last post...I should've been paying attention. You said it feels like a buck. I think, I'm not sure, but it sounds to me like you are sucking air into the fuel system, when it passes through the injectors you are feeling air bubbles, or bucks, from the engine. An easy way to find out for sure if it is air is to put a clear line from the IP to the metal return line. You should be able to see air flowing before you would be able to feel the engine bucking.
Brooklyn tow 08-12-2006, 07:56 PM cough is a good description
Brooklyn tow 08-12-2006, 07:56 PM the wires were to!
Brooklyn tow 08-12-2006, 07:58 PM im going to drive home now....will post again in 1 hour....thanks.....Louis
DieselDave16 08-12-2006, 08:03 PM Yep, sounds like air. Put that clear line in...if you find that it is air then you need to just start looking, and feeling, and looking, and feeling, look, feel, look. When you don't find anything, look some more. It took me 2 months to hunt down my air leak. Another thing you can to is to put air, not more than 4 or 5 psi into the fuel system and wait for a leak to show itself.
Horsehaulin 08-12-2006, 08:40 PM Have you replaced your fuel filter lately, or checked the little air vent nut on top. Make sure the filter ring is not cross threaded. Tighten the air bleeder nut on top of the filter also. Our tow trucks have had the same problemin the past, and we found it to be the bleeder was not tight from the factory and caused air in the fuel. Also a cross threaded ring would cause a leak too, dont try and fix the ring if it is just buy a new one.
Brooklyn tow 08-16-2006, 02:53 PM Thanks guys I really apprieciate the feed back, I'll start at the fuel filter and that clear line and let you know what I find. Well now looks like my water pump just went bad, (leaking like a siv) I just ordered one from ssdiesel supposed to be high output 130gpm from stock 93gpm anyone have any feedback on this product? The price was $20.00 cheaper than the dealer hope the Quality is good. Anyone change a water pump recently any tricks or problems i should look for?......Thanks ..Louis
thumbs 08-16-2006, 04:41 PM I agree with starting with a new fuel filter. Then replace the OPS from the lift pump. It's cheap and not too hard to replace.
Brooklyn tow 08-29-2006, 06:25 PM can't find any air.....also now it's about 2 weeks after 1st post and I feel like im losing power.....any suggestions?......thanks, Louis
