What does a lift pump do Exactly - Gm said I might want to replace it (of course) to prevent Injection pump failure - it's working now, but with 160,000 MI on a 94 Yukon - How do I know if I should http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Question.gif
Thanks

Lift pump supplies fuel to injection pump, if lift pump is weak or INOP then IP doesn't get as fuel in the amount needed, truck can be hard to start or not run proper. Pump is on the frame rail by the drivers area. The pumps are about $80-90 at your mileage I would consider it.

What bad things could happen I'm going to be running a remote mount FSD (not a PMD anymore !http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif) Gm said something about Metal getting in the fuel system if it fails.. ??? Umm -only thing I can think is that the Inj pump might get to hot if lift pump isn't up to par or????

Just went thru this. If Lift pump, fuel pump for gas guys, fails, you will get metal in IP. This will cause IP failure. Very simple installation.

Ok - Thanks.
I know it's easy enough to change - I just was wondering why metal would get in INJ pump - When a Gas fuel pump dies the car just won't run - not get metal particals in the injectors.

Tommy something to consider is frame mounted fuel filter prior to lift pump keeps rust & crud from fuel tank from trashing lift pump which then makes its way to the IP. I run a Racor 660R 20 micron as a primary.
Tommy I answered this the other day as I was headed out the door, I re-read your question; your dealer is on some mind altering substance, relocating PMD turning it into a FSD, WILL NOT cause metal to go to IP, it's a electrical device no direct contact with fuel system, on a way out reach a starved IP because of FSD fault could make metal from lack of lube, but truck would shut down 1st I doubt even that is possible, if that scenario were true a LOT of trucks would be making metal.
Only source of metal is from tank, fuel lines, entrained in fuel crud/metal, a self destructing lift pump, rust is a possibility from tank to trash the LP, which is why I recommend frame filter prior to LP that is beneficial to both LP & IP by providing cleaner fuel to all.Edited by: Turbine Doc
