I just recently perchased a 1982 GMC K-15 pickup with 6.2 naturally aspirated, NP208, sm465. I rebuilt the starter and now it starts right up, and runs and drives great but when I turn the key off, it keeps running for a few minutes and dies. I pinch the fuel line and it will eventually die.. When I first got the truck home it would die with the key, and now it won't. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you turn the key off, are you still getting 12V to the terminal on the passenger side of the IP?

I have had this problem before on mine it was the fuel stop solenoid which is under the top cover of the Injection pump. Remove the three bolts that hold the cover on flip it over and lube the solenoid with some sort of penetrating oil re install and the problem should be solved. At least that's what worked on mine hope it helps.

Trevor's right on. That is most likely what is going on, although occasionally the ignition switch will malfunction and cause the solenoid to stay energized.
Be careful when you pull the cover off... Reinstalling it incorrectly can cause the engine to run away when you fire it up...

OK...I am getting power to the IP (top passenger side red wire) with key on...And no power with it off so i know the ignition is not the problem. I took off the top cover and found that plunger was in fact sticking, so i sprayed it with penetrating oil, and put it back together. Now I gotta get a starter cause I fried mine. This truck has been sitting since '02 and I knew it was week. So I'll get that this weekend, and I'll let ya'll know how it goes. Thanks for the help

OK...I got the starter from O'Reilly's Yesterday ($147 w/tax), put that on, and lubed the soledoid again. Still don't want to die. I checked the wire going to the IP and it does not have power with key off, but it does with key on. I pulled that wire off and it immedietely dies, just like you turned the key off. If i don't pull the wire, it doesn't run AS long but it still doesn't die right off the bat....very frustrating...other than that it runs great.

Sounds like the solenoid is getting power somehow with the key off...

Just thought of something...
This is an '82 model... Seems to me they used to have a problem with the alternator feeding power to the ignition circuit after the key is turned off...
I'd try unhooking the alternator and see if it will shutoff with the alternator unhooked...

I've seen the valves stick.
after you turn off the key try rapping the valve with something (a tire iron for example), if it shuts off after a sharp tap or two it's definantly not a electrical problem. since you have tried lubeing the valve I'd look at replacing it if this works.
