We used to get day olds and raise them free range, this time of year it's too cold to keep them in the barn even with heat lamps, so my wife kept them in our sunroom in the house. She's like that, she'd keep the horses in the house if I let her.


Woke up middle of the night to this tremendous racket, the inmates had escaped. 100 cheaping chicks scattered all over the house and three barking dogs trying to herd them up. They were everywhere, under the couch, behind furniture, chicken chit everywhere......


And don't ask about the pigmy goat we had.......

Silkies are exotics, neither a standard meat or egg chicken. In fact, they just barely qualify as chickens. They are classed bantams and lay a medium sized brown egg. Really strange looking when adults. They have black skin, scales, beaks, bones and meat. They have blue/purple "walnut" shaped cones and turquoise ears and have five toes. Now for the strangest attribute! Their feathers don't have "barbs", so they look like "silk" fur (hence the name silkies). Silkies date back 4000 years to china. People usually raise them show, brooding hens (they are the best), or pets. We just though they were cool.
