I just made my first trip pulling a 37 foot 5th wheel. It is a big one. Ithink its weight is around 14,000 pounds. It is 11 feet high
The outside temp was 94.
The highest turbo temp was 1200 up a hill.
The water temp never moved off of 190.
The fan never engaged.
I was doing 70.
The trans temp never reached 200.
The only modifications I have made from the stock is 4" straight pipe no muffler or cat.
My mileage was around 8MPG so I know I was generating a lot of heat.
Would this have made some of the lly's to overheat?
Do I have one of the non overheaters or did I not load it enough?

I pull a BIG loads every weekend in near 100 degree temps with no O.H. problems.

Yup, like me it looks like you've got a Non-Over Heater. Knock on wood.:)

What were the hills/wind/traffic like? Did you have any stop-n-go stuff?

Just curious,

Okay, I have to pipe in here.....

I have The Edge/Attitude and on the display there is an option to watch the Coolant temp. Just for your information, my stock guage is straight up (right in the middle) when my Attitude display reads 174 THROUGH 228 degrees! Thats a pretty big range. I also, do not have overheating problems and will sometimes hit 1450EGT's but I'm modified. My worst scenario was The hill out of Baker, CA with my 40 foot Toyhauler in 118 degree weather. I was going 60MPH and hit 238 degrees. Trans was hot too...

I'm pulling about the same weight & have no OH problems either.

Ok, I was not an overheater until last summer I went up a 7 mile 7% grade topped off at 11,000 ft. (Monarch Pass, Co.)all of the guages was almost in the red when we got to the top!
Didn't puke, came real close!
It was worst comming back! Had to stop three times and cool down!
It was 80 degrees no wind, total weight 22k.

Pulled all over the midwest previously, no problems, except the fan once in a while when it was hot!

Good luck!

Well there you go. Almost all overheat cases are pulling up steep grades for several miles in the heat. I could pull 30,000(not really but I could pull 16k with no problems) on the flats if there were no hills without any problems.

I've been very successful OHer by doing the following (starting alt 2500'):

Hot day: 100* + Outside
A Load and a Hill which requires alot of constant thottle (>90%) to go 50mph or less.
Time, you'll need to spend 5mins or so at these conditionsPS
Biterman is 100% correct, you can't use the OEM gauge to determine how hot you're. It lies! My fan cycles between 217* (on) and 198* (off). No motion on the ECT gauge. Another web site has some data but it can't be linked on DP...

Oh, altitude has a huge impact on the cooling system. Higher you go the lower the OAT needs to be to OH.

every time mine has overheated has been climbing steep hills with at least a elevation of 7,000 feet or higher. pulling my fifth weighting in around 15,000lbs on flat ground or climbing hills at low elevations i have no problems at all. just like crfer states. you cant depend on the stock gauges. my real engine temp is about 240 before the stock gauges even start to move. i am a firm believer that every lly will overheat just most people don't meet the necessary requirements.

I though I was a lucky person with the OH problem. Just got back from a trip from CA to NM, CO and home. got a little warm pullin them hill. Trailer is a toyhauller @8,000 lbs. Temp gauge said 235 but it was hot. So hot it blued the exhaust pipe from the turbo to the muffler. Nice shade of blue:eek: Its in to see the dealer just waiting to hear from them. last year pulled fine, this year shes hot. Differance is the OS update for surge.

I wish there was a chip or flash to make all the factory gauges stop lying, more specifically the engine coolant temp gauge.

I am buying a new gauge in the morning! TX has an adapter that fits in the upper hose and I am going to use that for the sender location. I am also buying a oil temp gauge and I am going to install both in that useless space in the overhead :)

For the LLY newbies here, there is no such thing as a non overheating LLY. Given the load and hill it will happen. Period.

End of thread.

Sorry.

I had a very interesting time climbing "Wolf Creek Pass" in Colorado last month, it is a 9 mile 7% grade.. We just got a new 5er that is taller, longer and about 2,000 lbs heavier. Started out ok doing the speed limit, but about 3 or 4 miles into it I saw the coolant temp go to about 235 degrees and tranny temp climbing... Turned off a/c rolled down windows turned on heater and slowed to 15 mph,-:t made it to the top without having to stop, and my radiator never puked, but the tranny was just off the red. Never got the dic warning like last year when I was racing a motorhome up the same hill, coolant temp never got to the red, but man that tranny was hot. Stopped at the top for about 10 minutes at idle til it cooled down a bit, (really don't want to loose a tranny going down hill).:exactly:
By the way, this same hill killed my '91 G.M.C.'s tranny about ten years ago pulling a 6,500 ld travel trailer.

Here is one part of your answer :) The trailer on the left is mine.. It's 13.8 tall and the one on the right is 11 feet tall.. Notice any differences :)

Unless you have another reason other than OH, keep your truck and fix it with TC's V2, If you want to be real fancy get his fan for the V2 and kill any hint of ever OHing again!

Exactly load is = Rolling resistance + Drag.

By the way my LLY is no longer an overheater. I dont have issues with high oil temps either.

This is Swatkin's slacker load. :)
My next trip through his area, I will show him what real trucks tow. ;)
