: Quad 120 and Stock Allison = KABOOM and GOODNIGHT!!
koopdaddy 05-26-2004, 07:46 PM I posted last week about the Quad 120 on my 2004.5 D Max w\ the Allison. Well today she passed on (STOCK TRANS) !!! We had to pull her out today, after teardown we found that the C3 clutches and steels are smoked. Since I am not allowed to say anything regarding my companies products, I will not say what I am going to do about it. I can tell you that the Converter is PERFECT still as well as every other clutch pack in the transmission. Just to note, the Quad was installed 1100 miles ago. I have driven to Colorado and back and even after clearing the TAP cells and doing the relearn, the transmission would never shift smoothly (or shift at all at times ) under full throttle on the 90 or 120 setting. This is a warning to all of you out there, your stock trans WILL NOT hold a Quad 120 w\ a HEAVY FOOT! If you plan on upgrading your motor, make sure that you have a few $$$ left for your girl Allison.
CPMac 05-26-2004, 09:25 PM I've tried to tell everyone that I have sold one to that the 120 setting will need tranny upgrades. I think if you take it easy on the low setting then move up you may have good luck but it won't make the long haul driving aggresively for sure.
dmaxalliTech 05-26-2004, 10:57 PM I can tell you that the Converter is PERFECT still as well as every other clutch pack in the transmission. please dont say that means your gonna leave it in there...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Kennedy 05-27-2004, 09:42 AM Aside from a couple of guys at the track stacking and beating the ever loving hell out of them, I really haven't heard of any Allisons going Kaboom. Dunno what you did to yours to destroy it so fast....

At this point not sure he is selling anything either. Just yapping at the mouth. Typical for a new build up sales pitch that will be coming soon unless it falls flat on its face. Should be interesting..
koopdaddy 05-30-2004, 01:11 AM I am not trying to sell anything. Just letting people know that 120 extra HP is a recipe for disaster. Please do us all a favor, buy a Suncoast or ATS, or whomever transmissions, it doesn't matter, what mattes is that the info is out their on what will happen to a stock trans and alot of extra HP. Please don't take this for more than it is.
Reggie 05-30-2004, 08:39 AM With a loaded signature like that.
Ya right.
McRat 05-30-2004, 06:09 PM Geez guys, lighten up.
He owns a DMax, it torched the trans with a 120hp tuner. I seriously doubt he works for Al Queada.
DSTRBD 05-30-2004, 07:48 PM Either way, my interest is definately sparked. I have been searching for a "bulletproof" upgrade for a while. Seems like everything out there can't handle the power. With a F*rd or D*dge, you get a BTS and never have to worry. Sure would be nice to find that in an Ally upgrade. I, like many others would like to do the tranny once and be done with it. Whats the sense in spending $5000 on a tranny and then have to swap it out once it blows? You can do that with a stock tranny without blowing 5 g's. If you have something, please share.
BIG DIPPER 05-30-2004, 10:08 PM Atleast he doesn't have a picture of Joe Webb's truck up on his website...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
I don't know if a "bulletproof" tranny will ever be built....no matter how strong you make it....there is always that ONE guy. The mods available now, Suncoast and ATS....along with just the Transgo....will get a guy to hp levels most will never venture to. I would be willing to bet he is using the Transgo and possibly machining parts to increase capacity....but why take the risk when you can give one of the above mentioned vendors a call that has already done their homework. Suncoast, Transgo, and ATS have a lot of time and money in R&D....and there are plenty of people on this forum using these products that can give feedback, so why take the risk of going out on your own.
McRat, I don't think they are trying to flame the guy, but he does have his tranny site in his signature and he baits you with..."everyone wish they could get their hands on..." kind of comments at the same time telling you that he can't talk about the products.......There have been other shops SAY they are going to do something different, but not to many shops have the kind of coin laying around to put the time in and research it......I would also bet they are selling another companies converter as well. The Allison is built very well....big and strong....it just has a few weak links that need addressed.....the companies I mentioned above are doing a great job of doing just that.

Mike L. 05-31-2004, 12:39 PM I don't think koopdaddy was really trying to sell anything. Think he was just trying to give some good advice. As far as secret mods, I don't think there is anything astounding that the big boys don't know about. Some of it I like and some of it I would never install in my Ally. As far as bulletproof; when you start getting close to 1200 ft lb of tq and over, you are capable of breaking anything. No transmission is safe under high horsepower and torque

koopdaddy 05-31-2004, 09:00 PM MIke L,you hit on the head, NOTHING and I mean NOTHING is bulletproof. Owning one of largest remanufacturing compaines in this country I can attest to that. We make the best transmissions for the MARK IV Toyota Supra Turbos (1000+ HP), but even with all we do, you can always defeat it by driving it like an idiot and by pushing it 4x past what is was original designed for. As for transmissions, our extensive tesing has shown that transmissions with just the transgo kit and a triple disc converter are just as strong, and at times stronger than the rediculously expensive transmissions that are built by other companies. By machining pressure plates, changing the clutch stack (adding clutches) and changing calibrations, you can at times actually DEFEAT the transgo shift kit. The kit was designed for use in STOCK transmissions, and is not made to be used in conjunction with other components. If you still want further info on this subject, please ask me, I will make a factual post and show w\ pictures even, what is done to the various transmissions on the market. If anything comes of this, I hope that the smoke and mirrors are gone and that people begin to understand that there is no silver bullet, nor will there be any silver bullet or perfect fix for this or any other transmission when it is pushed to rediculous extremes. Even if you spend $5000.00 +++ on a transmission. Remember anyone can charge anyprice on anything, pricing has alot to do with WARRANTY, and $5000.00 can replace alot of failied transmissions. As for me trying to sell something, I will say this, I have never stated my products for sale, nor have I implied I would like people to contact me to buy something from my company. THe reason for my sig is so that when I make posts like these people will feel more comfortable in beleiving what I say and not think that I am just another JO SCHMOE putting my 2 cents in.
Mike L. 05-31-2004, 10:36 PM koopdaddy
I wouldn't go that far. I feel that I build one hell of a trans whether it be for a Dodge , Ford, or GM. When I see a customer with a 40' trailer with a TTS, Edge, Bullydog program, I try to sell them a Suncoast. I do not compromise. That's why I deal with Suncoast, TTS, and PML.. If you guys are going to hang my ass, it won't be because of quality, maybe my hair?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

I WANT MORE INFO ON THIS SUBJECT. FILL US IN ON WHAT ALL IS DONE ON A $5000 TRANNY, AND WHY IT COSTS AS MUCH AS IT DOES.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
sdaver 06-01-2004, 09:27 AM let him design one, get the parts built, do his testing, install a few, and stand behind it........and then tell us what its worth........if its a better deal than so be it.............my tranny a suncoast holds a hell of alot more than 120 over stock........I understand warrenty is a consideration when it comes to the cost but would you want one without a warrenty? koopdaddy should build his and let me or mack abuse it and then name his price to the John Q Publichttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
