: injector or rocker?

i knew this day would come:rolleyes: .

ive got a strange knock coming from the turbo side. isnt a rod knock thats for sure. from my experience with gas motors it kinda sounds like a loose rocker knock. would the nylon tab cause this or could it be the injectors? i was told they make more of a tick than a knock. its pretty clear on idle and goes away as the engine picks up speed. it also seems to get slightly louder after its been running for a while. ive been waiting to pull the valve cover off until i get my new injectors and do it all at once.

any ideas?

Try some Standadine diesel fuel conditioner, its a lubricant for the pump and injectors. After parking my truck for 2 years I had a tick/knock from the passengers side and the engine was running rough, sitting at a stop light the truck would rock like a gas engine with a miss. Now most of that is gone since I started using the diesel fuel conditioner.

Check the turbo heat shield and the rod that braces the turbo from the intake. They have been known to be loose and cause a rodknock type noise.

Also look for an injector line hitting the heater hose/pipe.

That causes a rather troubling sounding knock. A good check is to stick your head in the passenger footwell while idling. If its an injector line touching the heater pipe, then you will hear it loud and clear in the heater core housing.

I had this happen and I thought for sure the motor was fixing to have a come-apart.

could also be the vacuum pump, take a stetiscope to the the engine while running and listen for were the knock is comming from.

from what i can tell its coming from right beside the turbo. i checked the hoses to see if they were rubbing but from what i can tell the arent. i put my hand on the heat shield and it seemed to quieten it a little cause im missing the top bolt. ive also put a couple of fuel condensioners and cleaners through it. and it doesnt seem to be coming from the vacuum pump but im not possible.

one thing i forgot to mention was that it isnt a constant knock. it has somewhat of a little rythem but not much. when it does it it usually does the same thing but not in a constant rythem. could this be injectors?

My injector tick/knock has been coming and going, if I use lubricant it goes away if not it comes back after about a 1/8 of tank of fuel. Stanadyne fuel injection conditioner is the real deal not snake oil made for Stanadyne the diesel fuel injection systems manufacturer.
