: First hook, im hooked
icer97 08-06-2006, 11:30 AM I saw this quoted on here before, it holds true! I pulled last night for the first time and thanks to you guys (ive searched alot in this section) I kinda knew what to expect. I didnt do so hot, pulled a hair under 160 ft. My truck kept hunting gears between 3rd and 2nd, my edge kept defueling due to my EGT set point. Another truck identical to mine disabled his backdown and spanked me. I didnt care I was just happy to see a duramax up there with those dodges. The dodges still dominated, running their tall gears and 6 speeds they sounded like they were gonna die but then they get on top and with that wheel speed they are hard to beat. My question for you guys is do I need to disable my back down? The guy that does said he has had no problems at all, has puled 9 times this year like that, and that 1700 degrees wont hurt anything cause its flash heat. I thought aluminum melts around 1500? Another question is that edge claims to be getting 32 psi of boost with the waste gate disabled when running the hot version. Should of I unplugged my waste gate too? I had to enter the 8500 diesel class so I was 1000 under weight and had 2 cummins duallys running with twins, sounds fair huh? The 7500 class was open so I didnt think I could compete, but should of because they has less weight. I love this stuff!:muahaha:
Dmax Tim 08-06-2006, 03:40 PM Check around for true street stock instead of the class u ran in.
Some pulls have 3 or 4 diesel classes.
Read what guys have done to the trucks, also check out Tomac's website www.duramaxracing.com and read/pics of his set up.
Find some guys on here that are close to u and go watch/help them is a great way to learn.
U need to do work on your front end before u break something.
Tony Burkhard 08-06-2006, 04:10 PM Hello the egt during a pull will run off the chart depending on how much fuel you put to it and of cource your turbo will make a big differance. if your box keeps defueling you should disconnect the probe when your pulling, The 10 seconds of heat should never hurt your turbo, You would much love a bigger turbo like the 5k. And for your front end there is some cool tricks to get you by to increase traction and help make sure you can drive it home after the pull. More than happy to help if you would like. Many of the tricks took years the hard way to learn or just hang around mike for a few minutes.

icer97 08-06-2006, 10:53 PM I think next time im gonna disable the back down and just hope for the best! I think if I could have stayed in 3rd id done alot better. I watched it on video and my tires about stop when it searches for gears. Thats what hurt me. I know I need to beef up my frontend, im gonna order some tierod end sleeves. I think that some after market exhaust will help a bunch also. I dont think my stock exhaust is getting rid of the heat fast enough. Will these racing tuned ecm's these guys offer work well in the when pulling? Also has any of you guys pulling had any driveshaft issues? One dmax guy I talked to said he pulled on a real tacky track in Bowling Green Mo. last week and blew 2 rear driveshafts ($500 or so a piece through GM). He said they are filled with stirafoam and make a heck of a mess when they blow. He had trouble with that but he has had NO issues with his frontend or his allison trans! When I mention getting a tranny upgrade (heard alot about it here) everyone laughs at me. Whats up with that? Maybe pulling for 15 secs in low side is no threat to the tranny? Thanks for the input guys, id like to get into this heavy and be competitive, money willing! :ro)
bogger 08-07-2006, 12:05 AM yes eventually you will need a tranny. for pulling i'd ditch the edge they're not made for that. yeah you should get yourself an exhaust as well. did you play with your tire pressure at all, and crank your torsion bars down??
icer97 08-07-2006, 02:48 AM I cranked my torsion bars all the way down, blocked the rear to 2 inch travel but found out later they allowed it to be solid. I ran 50 psi in rear, 30 in the front. Thats all I did. Put it in 4 low, 3 on the tree, foot to the floor. It shifted into 3rd fine, but then fell on its face due to the egt backdown, then took off again. On video looked like I about stopped 3 times before the sled broght me to a stop to dig 3 holes. My tires were plenty aggressive im running dayton timberline mt's. My bumper hight was only around 22 inches, I had a 4 inch drop reese hitch put in upside down which put me to 26 inches but everyone laughed and said id either break it off at the weld, or turn it into a candy cane, so I put the standard hitch back in.
bogger 08-08-2006, 06:45 AM yeah speaking from someone that has snapped a hitch it's not fun. drop your tires to 25 up front and 60 in the rear should see a diff.
icer97 08-08-2006, 11:23 PM bogger will do. Next time ill drop the front tire pressure down more. First think I need is a tranny and converter so I can really pour the power to it. Then im looking at PPE and a Mcrat tune along with EFI. And not to forget tie rod end sleeves!
havns3 08-14-2006, 11:24 PM hey icer i live close toyou where didyou pull at?
icer97 08-15-2006, 10:15 AM I pulled at Palmyra Mo. (Marion county fair) 2 weekends ago. Were you there pulling too?
How the crap is your tranny holding up with that much power???
SmokeShow 08-15-2006, 01:14 PM Thy can last a little longer pulling than drag racing cause its all locked up as soon as you hit 3rd gear (and maybe even 2nd gear, can't remember for sure) which is early on and then its not much different than a built trans once the TCC is locked. The stock TC can't hold quite as much as a triple disk but it can hold pretty good for a little while when in 4lo 3rd gear. Obviously he is going to end up trashing it but it will last a little while as-is.
He still should start thinking about upgrading before long with his power level (I think Tomac is still running a Stage III ATS trans for now and we all know his truck is a real performer).

Like he said running in 4 low in the bottom 3 gears helps. I have had no issues yet, and plan to upgrade.
havns3 08-15-2006, 10:17 PM no my father in law pulls super stock tractors in east central assoc. but we haven't made to many pulls this year. where will you be pulling next?
