:help:
Let me give a quick run down. I live in the Palm Springs California area and it has been HOT. The trans in my 2002 2500HD shortbed crewcab 4X4 with 75,000 mi. runs between 190 & 200 degrees with no load or in-tow. I was worried about this until research on this site and with several of my buddies who have the Duramax showed this is about average for our area and temps.
About two weeks ago I ran up to Idyllwild, CA with no load or tow, (Just a nice summer drive). It was about 120 degrees and 60 - 70% humidity outside and I was definitely running the A/C while traveling up the this mountain road. I saw my trans temp jump to about 230. We parked and hung out for about 2-3 hours before heading back down the mountain into Banning, CA.
On the way down, things began to get worse and the trans temp rolled up to 250. This is a very narrow, sharp down grade, switch back with no where to pull off. I limped into Banning and let the trans cool down to about 200 before heading home.
I had recently changed to Mobil 1 syn in the trans, (about 3000 miles prior to this day). The next day I changed the trans fluid and external filter, also dropping the pan and changing out the internal filter, (I thought maybe it had become blocked causing my problem). The filters appeared in good condition and the fluid still smelled NEW!!
I checked the trans cooler and it is not gunked up and air can pass through.
I ran the truck around town and the gauge still runs up to 200 degrees. I took it over and had a non-contact temp taken on the pan and it showed 160 degrees while the gauge still showed 200. I had the tech shoot different spots on the trans and sides of the pan and all readings were 180 and below.
Even though I have researched this site and all threads state the OE gauge is accurate within 5 degrees, can the gauge or sending unit be the cause of all my worries and that the trans is operating just fine and the gauge giving me bad readings?
Anyone have any info on changing the sensor or sending unit?
Sorry this is so long.:blahblah:
Thanks for all the info and expertise on this site it has been beyond helpful.
