: $100.00 to change fuel filter?????

I went to my local dealer today for an oil change, and I asked them about changing my fuel filter and they told me that it would be about $100.00. $41.00 for the filter and an hour of labor. My question is this the normal price of a filter change? If so, how easy is it for me to do it myself? Iam sure that I can get the filter a good bit cheaper, but Iam not sure of the procedure that is involved in change the filter. All input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Russ,

If I can do it, anyone can!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

Follow the steps described and you'll be done in no time, not to mention saving $80 and knowing your truck a little better.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Russ,

You can find them online for about $20. This is why they call "dealers" stealers. It only takes about 10 minutes to change.

And filters can be purchased from vendors that are supporters here in this forum like Greg from lubespecialist or Dmaxallitech's store, etc. relatively cheap!

Hey, I can top that!

Spin off Trans Filter Change was $64.80http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

$36.52 for the filter that you can get from Allison for $8.71, plus labor. At least he put the magnet on the new filter! Live and Learn to DIY!

DIY and buy online for sure! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif You need to buy a $10 strap wrench and really should have it and a spare filter in your truck in case of a load of bad fuel anyway. You want to know how in an emergency, so do it when you have an hour. It really should not take more than 1/2 hour if you take your time and try to keep all the fuel off the frame so it doesn't desolve the undercoating.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

I can't believe the price on that tranny filter.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif This is a 2 minute job, tops! I buy 3 or 4 at a time at the local Allison dealer to avoid the GM price gouging.

Ya, I got to chuckle at the one hour time frame. That's 15 minutes for a flunkly non-tech person like myself to change it and 45 minutes to stand at the parts counter to get the filter. I'd say learn to change it yourself and save the money. It's really easy.

It pays to do you're own basic maintenance. Learn where to buy online and purchase in quanity to reduce shipping costs. Keep receipts and document your mileage and date of maintenance. Leave the heavy maintenance or work requiring expensive equipment for your favorite stealer.

Russ... I had all my injectors replaced about a month ago, and when they did that procedure, they also replaced my fuel filter....for about 90 bucks! I did not authorize the filter change, and I was not told the filter had to be changed, so I questioned the charge. The service manager was new and didn't know me if he had he would have known that I change fuel filters at every other oil change, which is app 6000 miles. I buy filters by the case and the price is about $13 each. They charged $41 for the filter. I'm not a cheap-skate,but I think $41 is a tad high. Just goes to show you have to keep an eye on some folks.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif

Did you make him "Eat" the filter?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Throw Up.gif

I received a cute letter from my local "Stealer" a while back, offering me a http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif"Special"http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif oil change price of $24.95. It even had my Vin # on it. This is the same "Stealer" who got me for the Allison Filter for $36.00http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

I took them up on their offer, and when I got to the cashier, I was presented with a bill for $56.00. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gifI pulled out my letter, but was told that this offer only applied to gas engines. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gifI looked the letter over, front and back, but could not find any such restriction, nor any limit on oil quantity.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif Just my vin # with digit number 8 clearly identifying my truck as a Diesel. I showed them that. No Dice!

Went round and round with Service Mgr, who said he would keep the truck till I paid.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Broken Heart.gif I called sheriff, deputy came out, http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gifread letter, http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Smile.gifand advised service mgr to relinquish vehicle post haste! <IMG onMouseOver="this.style.cursor='hand'" onMouseOut="this.style.cursor=''" alt='Click on image to open in new window' onClic

Yes......they ate the filter. I complained to the cashier, so she calls the service manager up front. He said that the "new" injectors would not be warrantied unless the fuel filter was changed when they were installed. I agree with that in principle, but I didn't like the fact that I was not told about it from the start. Had I known, I would have brought them one of the filters that I had bought (NAPA brand), thats what they installed anyway. Service manager agreed that he should have told me, and said he would take care of the charges. I hate to piss these guys off because the tech that works on my truck is really GOOD....and alot easier to get along with than the new service manager http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif
