Somewhere in my owners manual/warranty booklet, I thought I read that I should be greasing my drive shaft axle splines. With 65K mikes, should I be pulling the drive shaft and greasing it? The last time I pulled the drive shaft on my older 1991 K1500, ATF flowed out onto my garage floor if I remember correctly.

What should I be doing to it and the front axle on my K2500HD 4X4???

thanks

The manuals are not updated very much, it's referring to when the 2 piece shafts had zerk fittings, something they've not had in roughly 6 years. If you continue reading you'll discover they want you to replace the spark plugs(gassers naturally) at 30K miles... the EPA requires them to go 100K.

The 'driveline clunk' threads on here are usually related to driveshaft splines that need to be lubed. This is a temporary fix, but still a fix. I'd say if you don't have a driveline clunk, you don't need to worry about it. As for front/rear axleshafts, I haven't heard of it being an issue. Still, why don't you search those threads and familiarize yourself with the issue. FYI, I pulled my front and rear driveshafts a while back and cleaned and lubed them. If the truck's on a level surface there shouldn't be much ATF leakage, just a little dribble. There is apparently some secret squirrel lube to use that prolongs the clunk's reappearance better than standard grease. Right now I'm using MoFoCo, oops, I mean, FoMoCo teflon axle grease, which is actually what my GM dealer recommended.

Drill the shaft and install zerk, works like a charm.

Do you have a P/N on that FoMoCo grease?

I'll get it for you. In the meantime, I know Merchant sells some extra-special goop as well. You might check with him, he's always got the best stuff. It hasn't been that long since I did this, so I can't really say whether the Ford stuff was worth it at $30 a can.
