Just had my IP replaced, and noticed today that I seem to be getting a LOT of black smoke under acceleration. Op temp of 200, been towing a lot of weight last couple of days, and just filled up when I noticed this. Op temp has started going up a little with the weight (8500 lb.) or so and just wondered what if anything might be wrong. Clean air filter, new oil change, double-filtered fuel. Also noticed slight decline in fuel economy since IP and lift pump replacement. Could be due to my heavy right foot though.Edited by: winchster

What is your idle speed? If you have a pinched wire/bad connection in the tempature sensing circuit it will idle high and blow smoke without a code.

Idle 600, and everything seems normal, just noticed the smoke this afternoon. Could it be the fuel, or have I just not noticed this before.

Do you have boost?
A vacuum hose could have been broken when the IP was replaced.

winchester,
600 is normal. dark exhaust usually means your not getting an efficient burn on your fuel. vacuum leaking in the wg/solenoid vacuum lines will cause boost to be lost. vacuum should be ~25 before the solenoid and ~15 after.

After 200 miles on the tank today, all seems to be in order. Only getting black smoke under heavy, hard acceleration. I have no idea if I'm getting boost other than it all seems normal. By the may QM I have no idea where the solenoid is.

The solenoid is on top of the valvecover driver's side. A tiny leak in the lines will prevent you from making full boost. Check the lines from the vacuum pump (low on the passenger side off belt drive) to the solenoid then to the wastegate. With the engine running you can get vacuum readings to make sure all is well.
