: What's normal for my LBZ?

I have a new '06 Silverado CC 4WD LT3 that I bought in March. It now has just over 7,000 miles on it. My question is should it smoke up the neighborhood when I get down on it? Normally I drive it gingerly, fuel is too expensive to waste. But occasionally I floor it, either out of necessity or just fooling around. When I do, a huge cloud of black smoke rolls out the exhaust, sort of like a 50's vintage transit bus. Once it blows that crap out, subsequent heavy accelerations seem to be clean; no smoke.

So is there something wrong with my truck, or is that normal?

You might say bad fuel, but how do you know you have good fuel? I mean, I can't tell teh difference other some fuels seem to get better mileage than others.

I'd say its normal, my buddy's dad has a LLY and he drive is like a grandma, when my friend gets in it he always hammers down just to experince the power and for the first 1 or 2 WOT's it smokes pretty good and then after the first 1 or 2 it just dosnt do much of any smoke. i think its from un burnt fuel in the exhuast somewhere gathering up from the granny driving and then when you finally open her up, she wastes it all out the back.

Thats just my best way of describing it, anyone else?

From what i have read soot accumulates in the cat and when exhaust temp. goes up with wide open throttle the soot is expelled.

I try to look forward when driving. :D "What's behind me I don't care" as he rips off the rear view mirror. Quiz time what movie is that from?

Wow  seems excessive for a "stock" truck. You have no mods listed so...

And as I recall , the quote is:

"What's behind me, is not important."

I also had thick black smoke at about 2500 rpm while pulling my trailer. I put the tranny in M -5th with towing on. Got the thing up to 2500 rpm and a thick black cloud was blowing outta my rear. It actually bogged out when the smoke started rolling and after that it ran clean. The last time I tried it just a heavy smoke ensued without the bogging down. I pull a trailer everyday so maybe I need to get on it a bit more when i'm unhooked.

I believe it is just that the soot is not being blown out of the cat/muffler because you are driving conservatively most of the time. Mine will do the same if I keep out of the gas for awhile or if idle for a long time. Try flooring it three times in a row and see if it goes away.

Granny driving will often result in smoke when you floor it. You don't seem to have a problem particularly since subsequent hard accellerations are smokeless.

It's a Diesel, they are supposed to smoke!!!):h ):h If it is black smoke it is perfectly normal!!! I drive semi for a living and in the good old day's there was nothing prettier to me than twin stacks blowing black as coal as I was rolling thru the gears!!! I had spot mirrors mounted so I could watch the old girl in all of her glory, this is back in the day before all of the electronics to over fuel management, you could have the local mechanic do a little tweaking and dump more fuel to the engine than it could ever digest!!):h :muahaha: :driver: Enjoy your soot belching Diesel while you can, it will soon become a thing of the past!!!:rules: :bawl: :bawl:

Mine does the same thing, 2006 lbz crew cab dually. After a couple of times getting on it it pretty much stops. I think I granny drive most the time also.
