A friend of mine got a new 600 a few weeks ago,4X4 loaded with all the good stuff,he asked me to ride with him up north to a camp ground to drop off his 5th wheel so it is up there for the big weekend and he wanted to make sure he got a spot, well his buddy with a new LLY Duramax took his trailer up also well the DMAX was behind us and when we hit the Zilwaukee bridge on I75 that DMAX blew his Dodge away, the DMAX had 90 miles on it the Dodge has 2200 miles on it,when we stopped I had to look under the hood because I knew he had something, but he didnt it was bone stock, the Dodge had 3.73s and I think he said the DMAX did too.It was impressive,it wasnt even close.

I think the dodge wasnt running right, seemed dogish compared to my 555,but I dont want to take anything away from the Chevy it surely got my attention.

Well it is possible that the duramax had a programming in the ECM that is not visible. There isn't really much available for the LLY yet so the chances are slim but it is possible.

Interesting. Were both operators "into it" and not holding back? What about the weight and air resistance of the trailers? Were they the same? Transmissions the same and gearing/rpm's both up for acceleration?

Like I said, Interesting.

The DMAX may have gotten a run but Mike said he was right behind him,but I am not sure, both 5ers were Newmars and were pretty close to the same.

I was impressed with my Dmax. It does get up and go and I would not be the least bit surprised if I got beat by one with this truck. I knew that when I bought it.

I found out he had a code set on his truck 1 week after he got it and took it in and I guess they cleared the code,he said he was only there 10 minutes or so,not sure if that means anything but to me his truck does not run right,we are going to go see the dealer tomorrow,he wants me to go with him, might see about driving another to compared it to.

I'm not sure but I think there might be an ecm re-flash for low power.

He picked his truck up today from the dealer,I guess they reflashed the ECM or the PCM ,not really sure, neither is he,but he says it sounds different and seems to run better,I havent driven it since he got it back today, but will tomorrow.

I drove it today and man what a difference, what ever they did it worked, doesnt even sound the same, now id like to go the the show again with the DMAX and see what happens.

Here's something interesting that might cause a stir..

From TDR

"Kieth Locklier has a post in here about a stock 600 4x4 auto running a 16.3. Someone at the ford site said that kieth or someone affiliated with him also ran a 6.0 and the best they could get was a 16.7. Over on the dieselplace they say that the LLY's are running 17.2-17.3. I personally dont have any hard facts but all the LLy's and 6.0's Ive riddin in were slower than any 600 ive been in. The LLY was definitly the slowest. These were all stock trucks at the time as well."

Yes it is interesting.

By the way Hoot,I took my truck in to have the dealer install my clearance lights this morning.

$79 for the lights and $80 to have them installed,I dont trust myself with a drillhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I would have put clearance lights on mine too if it didn't have them. Looks like you got a great deal.

That must be running in the non-tranny sacrificing mode (no boost @ start).

Got my truck back with a dent in the roof and the mirror on the passenger side all scuffed up,but the thing it they told me they did it and will fix the rent and replace the mirror.

But instead of it being $80 for labor, they charged me $110.60,$65 per hour and it took almost 2 hours by the book.

Shucks I could have put the dent in there myself and save some money, but @ least they fest up to it and will repair it.

But the lights look damn goodhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Everytime I advise people that install their own clearance lights I tell them to be careful and don't lean on the roof with your hands or it will buckle in. I know, i did it myself once on a brand new truck. I hate it when dealerships screw with you like that. That suck should be fixed and they should give you the whole job for free.Edited by: hoot

I called the dealer yesterday and got a price from Kenny, well Kenny wasnt there this morning so Randy quoted me $100,and the extra $10 for for HAZARDOUS MATERIAL DISPOSAL___WHAT.

They charge $65 an hour and took 2 hours, but it says CUSTOMER HEREBY ACKNOWLEDGES RECIEVING ORIGINAL ESTIMATE OF $200.This never happened,I original was $80.It says they worked 2 hours, but only charged me 110.60.

The scratch is more like a dent, you can see where the drill slipped and caused it to dent with a scratch,I will not make this mistake again.

As I said before the book calls for 1.5 hours. That is what we charge, 1.5 hours, weather we do it in 1.0 or if it takes us 2.0, we still charge 1.5, which at our shop equals $90.

Roof dents are like hood dents, it will always be seen from a certain angle and not the angle you look at it from when you pick it up. It sucks they dented it when the reason you let them do it was so you didn't dent it.

Yeah exactly, one good thing though,I know the manager of the body shop department,he helped me out when I had my new 98 1500 Quadcab, which everytime I went to the car wash and spray it off the paint would come off in sheets, but Dodge would not paint the whole truck just the parts that had the problem,so what he did was take it to a car wash and made sure every part had paint missing,so I got a new paint job so he helped me out there and he told me he will take care of ithttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

The 600 I test drove was a flat out dog, it had the 6 speed, it made decent low end but above 2000 fell on it's face, I hope they can do better than that.

Just to update,he had his turbo replaced and also had to replace the freeze plugs in the head, but anyway the new turbo did the trick,he says the truck is much faster and you can feel the power, also he says you can hear the turbo more now than before.

I will drive it in a day or two,but seems to be good to go.

I wonder what goes wrong with a turbo? Broken vanes? Bad bearings?

DGFoster
06-08-2004, 08:50 PM
I am not sure, but it was a low boost problem and the turbo took care of it.

i dont know bout who is supposed to be the fastest but: i like the looks of the dodge and the way it sets up (my gmc scrapes pulling into a parking lot) compaired to others and always wanted a dodge. so i been driving a lly chevy and a auto 600 dodge and didnt even bother with the ford cause a buddys got one here where i work and i am not impressed (raced him a dozen times and he has never been able to pull off or keep up). so back to the dodge .. i was so major unimpressed because i always wanted one kinda made me sick cause i sure aint buying one of those until they make em run a lil stronger.i have drove old chevy 6.5's that was faster than those trucks. it felt like it wouldnt hardly go above 85 so i sure dont wanna see what it would do pulling. i guess if you put a chip it always helps but who wants to chip one to make it run like others run factory

How often do you go above 85mph with a heavy duty truck? The inline 6 design is made for torque being it's a naturally balanced engine. Speed is a different story for the Dodge "Dog" If you want speed then chip it. Im satisfied with the Cummins powerplant, mostly becuase it's been a proven long lasting engine... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

The current Cummins engine is stronger than any other of the "3" stock trucks out there (advertised) i have drove old chevy 6.5's that was faster than those trucks. it felt like it wouldnt hardly go above 85 so i sure dont wanna see what it would do pulling.Above 85mph... yeah. It sounds like you should of bought a gasser. Pulling you would be satisfied, the big rigs use the same engine design as a Cummins. i guess if you put a chip it always helps but who wants to chip one to make it run like others run factory. If the Dmax is so good stock, why did you have to chip yours?

Phew, I just had to get that off my chest...

"it felt like it wouldnt hardly go above 85 so i sure dont wanna see what it would do pulling."

My 555 has no problem getting up and past 85 mph. The auto is doggy in first and second gear. It's not the motor. When the auto locks in third and fourth and you lay into it, boost builds and she flies past 85 in fourth. My 600 mile trip to Muncie I never once had a feeling of this truck not being what they said it would be. It loves the highway. It's just as comfortable if not more so than my GMC was and that's no BS. The cruise control on this Dodge is so much smoother acting and doesn't over run and back off. Solid axle on the Dodge is one huge surprise to me.

The Dmax has a better launch and is "peppier". Stock Dmax is faster IMHO. BUT IT'S 400 LBS LIGHTEREdited by: hoot

Vibe moved up to 75-80 and is much reduced since I put the 35" tires and reprogrammed to 601 revs per mile.

Hi Hoot,

My Durmax weighs in at 7,280 with a full tank of fuel and me. What are the Dodges weighing?

My Crew Cab SB GMC delivered at 6400 my Dodge is 6796.

Both delivered empty weight. Sorry... I remembered seeing 7400 somewhere on the Dodge. I just looked at the Dodge invoice.

Not as big a difference. Good call.Edited by: hoot

You must have gotten a bad one or you don't know how to drive. I test drove both the dmax and the psd before I decided on my dodge. I couldn't stand the way the powerstroke or duramax drove.... Nothing decent in the low end..

Lately I'm finding out how good my stock truck runs. Well except for exhaust annd a gutted intake... it's stock. I ran a guy with a 2002 Dodge and a 65hp chip last week. I beat him. We stopped and talked for a good while. Also ran a little against a guy with a 2004 common rail at Muncie that just installed a chip. He couldn't walk away from me so I think my exhaust and intake mods have made an improvement. Don't forget I'm running 35" tires and 373 gears.

I'm impressed too.Edited by: hoot
