Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel is 6 cents a gallon cheaper than Low Sulfur Diesel in Biloxi, MS. Chevron has the Low Sulfur Diesel for $2.899 and across the street Shell has the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel for $2.839. Regular unleaded gasoline at both places was $2.879.

I am running my first tank of the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. I hope the mileage does not decrease. I have been averaging between 16mpg and 17mpg on the Low Sulfur Diesel.

Does anyone else have any experience with the new ULSD?

Not sure why the LSD is more costly that ULSD when it is cheaper to refine. I used the ULSD and it seemed to lower my MPG but who knows for sure. Wish someone would do some testing on the two fuels to know for sure.;)
By the way the diesel in your state is cheap compare to Pa where it is $3.35 at some stations:(

They must be trying to move the ULSD.
People who know about it stay away form it for the most part.
It must suck trying sell this stuff and people still go and pay a few cents more a gallon for the normal LSD.

I would like to thank them by draging them behind my truck.

That price difference is well within normal fluctuations.
Ever since Katrina, prices have been all over the map and there's no predicting. Most stations are within 10-20 cents on gas, but #2 prices vary from a low of $3.03 to over $3.50... same stations running 87 @ $3.25, 89 @ $3.35, and 91 @ $3.45.

It's really a PITA... one station that I normally fill at has been the cheapest in the area for months. I filled up Tuesday at $3.09, figuring it was "cheap" since I'd seen plenty in the teens earlier.
Later that day, I found two stations in the immediate area at $3.03 and $3.05... the $3.03 station is normally the same price as my "regular", and the $3.05 station is often a bit higher than average.
...but not this week

After one tank of the ULSD, my truck averaged about 1 mpg LESS than the previous tanks in which I used LSD.

My trips are pretty much the same week to week. However, there may be other circumstances influencing the lower MPG as this was not an exact scientific experiment.

If I were to take a long trip, perhaps I would use ULSD leaving on the trip and LSD on the return trip. I guess even then there could be a headwind or other factors to consider. I really need to run several tanks of the ULSD to have a more meaningful comparison. It's just that now I am not too enthusiastic about running the ULSD.

Has anyone else compared the two?

I have yet to see (but I really haven't been looking) any ULSD anywhere in Western Virginia, Central to WesternMaryland, or Eastern part of West Virginia. (within 100 miles of D.C.). LSD is running about $2.85-$2.89. This is out of the immediate D.C. area though. I live about 100 miles west of D.C.

We stopped at a truck stop last week for lunch. While there I picked up the July copy of Truckers News. There is a short article on ULSD. I will list just a few quotes from it. Trucks without 07 engines aren't required to run it and truck stops aren't required to sell it. ULSD is not expected to negatively impact older engines. It will cost more but no one knows for sure how much. The EPA mandates that oil refineries must allocate 80% of their supply to making ULSD as of June 1. On top of the higher price, ULSD has lower energy content and a resulting fuel economy penalty of 1%. ULSD has less lubricity, but terminals plan to incorporate lubricating additives before it reaches the consumer. Also, some fleets who have tested ULSD report it cleans sediment out of fuel systems. There is more to the article but this should be enough to get things going. Later! Frank

 Been having little luck finding out what stations around here are selling as I haven't seen any new markings on the pumps around here. Some say they have to switch over by 9/1, and are starting to carry only ULSD, and that's all they're going to be able to get. It's downright frustrating trying to find out any information from the cashier who barely knows that there is a difference between gas and diesel.
