: A tale of two fuel filters
OEM fuel filter on the left was changed out of my 03 with 10k miles on the clock. Filter on the right came from my uncle's 01 with 20k miles. Neither truck used any additives, nor did we ever drain any water out of the filters. I think I'm going to be buying my fuel from some other station in the future. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif

Nope.

I bought (note the past tense) the majority of my fuel at a nearby Unocal/76 station here in Cornelius Oregon but I travel from time to time so maybe I got a bad load of fuel somewhere on the road? My uncle bought his fuel fairly consistently at a newer Chevron station in North Plains OR.Edited by: dndj

Hey thanks for the tip, I've been meaning to do that but the lines there always seem to be longer. Obviously worth the wait.
I should also mention that neither truck from the original pictures has any secondary filtration system, just OEM stock.
OC_DMAX 05-25-2004, 10:24 PM Below is a picture of my OEM filter after 9,000 miles. Very clean. This was before I installed my Pre-OEM Racor, so there was no pre-filtering of the fuel. The OEM saw what came out of the pump. Obviously, the Chevron Station in Yorba Linda, CA pumps good #2 diesel. By the way, the Cetane rating of this fuel was 52.
Contrast this to some of the other pictures you have seen on this website. You can see why it is important to select your stations carefully and once you have a good one, stay with them.

Station I get most of my fuel from has filters on all of their diesel pumps. Valaro in High Springs, Florida. They are a chain and have stations all over this area.
Jeff1 05-30-2004, 11:25 AM I've been buying my #2 diesel at a Flying J truck stop off of I-20 in Dallas for quite some time now. I've noticed the quality of diesel changes from time to time, never know when I'm going to get a good batch or a bad batch. I've looked for filtering at the pumps here in the Dallas area, however, haven't seen any yet. Any of you guys know of a good diesel source in my area, please let me know. I'm going to cut open my OEM and pre-filter at next change-out. I will let you all know how my Racor's are holding up.

That doesn't mean that they change it. But at least its there. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
DmaxAttack 05-31-2004, 11:06 AM You guys on the left coast are really getting hosed. I just paid $1.71 on Saturday for diesel at our local Speedway station.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif I remember when I was in San Diego in Feburary, normal unleaded was $2.10, that's before the summer "FUN" tax went into effect and it was $1.65 in Michigan.
DalDMax 05-31-2004, 01:39 PM Jeff1,
That FJ is where I've bought 99% of my fuel. I changed my pre-oem CAT filter with about 9000 miles on it. When I cut it open I was very suprised at how clean it was....could have gone 20k without any problems.
Don't know where you'd find anything better around here.....but if you do, pass the info along http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
AIR ASSAULT 18B 06-01-2004, 12:26 PM In Oregon it is the law that the attendant fill our tank. A few stations turn their head & let me perform this dangerous feat all by myself. A couple of stations I have used have had the filters like the one in the photo between the pump & hose. When I inquired about the maint or change of the filter he told me in the 2yrs he has worked there they have not changed the filter. He was told by the owner they do not change till it is so clogged it will not pump anymore. I guess the owner is not concerned about the quality of fuel going into customers vehicles be it a old beater thru a $100k+ big rig.
dmax lover 06-01-2004, 04:48 PM I was looking at the racor site to see about simply replacing the stock fuel filter assembly with a 460 (R60T filter cartridge with primer, heat and wif). Has anyone tried just bolting one of these on in place of the oem?
I noticed that Racor states that it uses plastic or aluminum bolts to avoid having the rust seen in the photo above and states something about avoiding having it pulled through the filter as well...
I would want to replace the oem to get a plastic bowl (easier inspection and no corrosion) and also to get it to where it should be - if I were to design this from scratch I would want 10 micron primary and 2 micron secondary (with primer, wif and heat).
On another topic - Racor says to estimate needed capacity (gph) based on horsepower (.18 * horsepower). Which makes me wonder if oem isn't sufficient when you bump horsepower to 450-500 hp. I see reports here of some of them "coming apart"... By the way, .18 * 450 is 81 - meaning an R90 filter cartridge. The oem filter is rated at something like 47 gph.

The more clogged a filter gets, the better it filters.
When I used to drive Macks, we changed fuel filters when we noticed a loss of power. Macks had two fuel filters, we changed the 1st on power loss, and the 2nd every other 1st.
