I need to load down the truck last weekend and couldn't use my compressor at home to air the rears to 80 psi like normal. I had a 12 volt compressor that I got from Sears about 10 years ago. It had never let me down until the left side. At 67 psi, the magic smoke left and it don't work no more.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif I had the right done and was able to go down about a mile and air up the last 13 pounds so I could be safe.
Anyway, that has set me on the track of a replacement. I have found all kinds of $200+ models that look like they would last forever, mount on the frame, need a tank, etc. I also found one from Interdynamics, an HD300 or Truck Air. I has a fan cooled motor and a 5 year warranty. They say it will run for 8 hour straight and that by far is the best duty cycle I have seen in a reasonable compressor. I have read several off road guys swear by it to air up their jeeps after the trails. I even saw a test that showed it compared to several of the high end units with good results. Sounds to good to be true, so is it?
Does anyone have one and have you used it for higher pressures? I think that is what caused the demise of my last one. It had never had any problems till the second tire going from 50 to 80 PSI.
If I ever wanted to do air bags, then getting a good one I could steal air for tires would make sense, but I don't really need bags. Thoughts?
CO2 is a good idea and much cheaper if you stay away from the pre-built units. You can purchase a tank for less than $100. All you need then is a regulater and a filler hose.
The good compressors are made from York A/C compressors and are driven by a winch motor. They run $700-$1000

CO2 is a good idea, but I don't air very often away from home. I have a SCUBA tank that I can use with just compressed air and it holds up to 3000 PSI. It works really well with my regulator and a tire adapter in the BC port. I never thought about leaving it in the truck due to the size. I did use it on dive trips in my younger days when I had a car with air shocks to handle the extra load of 8 tanks.
The Quickair 3 has a 70 PSI limit. The Quickair 2 is a better choice for tires as it will run up to 105 PSI. I read an interesting article that compared a shop compressor all the way down to the $11 Wally World specials and timed inflating a tire from 10 to 28 PSI. The Quickair 2 with a tank was close to the shop compressor but still got it's butt handed to it by the CO2 tank. Maybe a small tank mounted under the bed. The only issue would be refills, but I'm sure I can work around that.Edited by: chuntag95

I have a Viair 450C that I STILL need to mount up. Its 100% duty cycle and has a max pressure of 150PSI. I got mine for less than $200 off an ebay store from a company that posts them out there. They have their normal site too, but I went through ebay using the buy it now feature. Here is that companies ebay page:

The chrome ones are more expensive so I got the non chrome model. Great company and the pump showed up in great time. For specs on the pump itself or the other pumps that Viair has you can look here:

The truck-air is a portable 12v air compressor that sells for about $50. I have owned several 12v cheap compressors. I've used them camping and fishing from filling float tubes to blowing out my camper water lines. Most work ok but the're not designed for continuous use or longevity. The truck-air is a better unit, I've had one for a few years now and I've beat it! A good bang for your buck.

THANKS flyfisher! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif That's the kind of feedback I was looking for. I would like to get a $200, but that's $200! I can't slow the wife down on home improvement projects right now. First was the retaining wall (the start of the whole compressor thing) now we are swaping the master bath tub for a shower with dual heads and this weekend we are putting tile down in the dinning room, hall and entryway. My back will never be the same. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

I have the Viair 450C an I love it so far. I have it connected to a 5gal. tank underneath my truck. I just use it for my horns though, haven't had the chance to use it to fill my tires yet.
P.S. the oasis one above weighs in like at 45lbs., I looked into it before buying my VIAREdited by: LBZrcks

Tile is a bear on the back. I did one small room... I don't know how they do it all the time.
I forgot to mention the Viar 450c I was also looking at that one. That was going to be the one I got. But I decided after buying a 50 amp breaker, tank and all the install time and expense, the compressed tank made more sense for my use. Heck I traded the truck not long after the horn install so removing the tank and reinstalling it in the new truck was a breeze.
There is one thing you need to consider when it comes to loading your truck up with accessories... all the money and time spent. If you tend to sell or trade before 100,000 miles, its crazy. So I limit my mods.Edited by: hoot

Any pictures of your install? I dont see much room under the truck at all. The only place I can think to mount my pump and 5gal tank is in front of the gas tank.
