A lot of the power adders also have the capability of reading codes. The only other way to get the codes would be a GM Tech 2 or another scanner device.

How long do i have to "check" codes. Like when i shut off the key is that it, all is lost or what?? How will i know if they are recent codes or not? Something a dealer could do in 5 mins, or would i be better off suckin up to Autozone to test it. Id prefer to go to Carquest if they do it, good guys at the one in my area....
Thanks for the info-Adam

Most codes will clear themselves from history after about 40 drive cycles (engine started cold, warmed to operating temp, turned off) without a reoccurance of the porblem that set the code.
I don't know about other scanners but a Tech 2 will store failure info. It will store a freeze frame of certain parameters at the time the code set including mileage.
It depends on the dealer, some will just run out and check for code for you, others will make up a repair order.
