OK this may be the dumbest question to appear on this forum but I would appreciate a legitimate answer.

Why is my Turbo so quiet???

Although I feel I have the better truck, I am jealous when I hear a newer D**ge or F*rd truck go up my street and their Turbo’s are just a screaming. http://www.corvetteforum.cc/zeroimg/smilies/drool.gif http://www.corvetteforum.cc/zeroimg/smilies/drool.gifhttp://www.corvetteforum.cc/zeroimg/smilies/drool.gif
Just for the heck of it, I pulled the little resonator box off the intake and it didn’t seem to make any difference.

Any advice? I wannaa make some noisehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

You did not say if you have an after market air intake system! If not, that would help. It seems that the AFE stage II with the blue filter helps the most.

One thing, the Cummins has a bigger turbo, and they all seem to be louder regardless of the setup. And it seems like the new 6.0L Powerstroke has a very load turbo as well.

Another thing to consider it, they maybe running the 6 speed manual transmission and revving in a lower gear.

Sorry I can not help better, but without all the details, that`s the best I can do.

I believe it has to do with the compressor and/or turbine design. Some are louder out the exhaust and some make noise in the intake or both. Great pains are gone through to eliminate this as noise restrictions become ever tighter. Also, some people may not like it. I like it and wish it were as loud as my old 1693 CAT. It was the loudest turbo I've ever heard. For the most part, I think ours make more noise on the intake side. As stated, you can amplify this with a steel pipe and open air filter ala AFE. I'm sure a few others will chime in with better info than what I have to offer.

I think it was designed to be a quiet turbo.

The whistle is only heard at under 10 PSI when building boost, well what can be heard by the human ear most likely ....

I find in the 5-7 PSI range it to be the most prominent ....

I know the AirBox doubles as a silencer ....

I have to guess the to noise is generated by air rushing in the turbo combined by slow engine RPM resulting in blade turbulence ...

The AFE will make a noticable (sp) difference. The cab is sealed quite well but when the passenger side window is down the lb7 with the AFE stage II will sing pretty good. Not a powerstroke.....that thing is nuts.....almost too much to have to live with all the time....would be very cool on occasion but I think it would get old.

Anyway...the only big imprvement out there is the AFE stage II

Mac Mine whisles right on up past 10 psi. Are you sure you have noticed that yours stops at 10 psi?

Above 10 psi all he hears is the chunks of rubber flying off his DRW http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I like quiet.

If I needed noise I could have got myself an older Cummins our Powerstroke. You could always trade in your '03 and get an '04 LLY, I hear their turbo's are a little louder. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

As others have stated, I never heard mine at all until I installed the AFE Stage 2. With it, I have a nice whistle. Not so much as to bother anyone, but enough to know it is there. I don't recall hearing mine get quieter after 10PSI, but that could be because of increased engine, wind, and tire noise when I am applying enough right foot to draw more than 10PSI.

Afterall, mine seems to go straight from 10 to 20 PSI in one shot! Doesn't everybody's?!?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Does the turbo run all the time or only under certain conditions?

I've notice that on (apparently) odd occasions, I'll hear a lot more air getting sucked in (at least that's what it sounds like) but it doesn't seem to depend on acceleration, load, temp, or anything else--it just happens.

I'd like to know when the turbo is designed to kick-in, or is it running all the time and the noise described above is something else? What?

...a little education please...

thanks!
