I am nearing 100K on my truck. My original windshield was not cracked, but was badly pitted. It seemed I could never get my windshield clean and the glare when I drive into the sun in the morning was possibly getting dangerous.

I replaced the windshield and what a difference. My windshield got pitted over time, so I didn't notice how bad it was. Cost was $150 and installed at my work. I highly recommend this small improvement to anyone's truck that is getting up there in mileage.

What causes a windshield to pit, and is it noticeable ????

Sand? Acid rain?

I have averaged a windshield a year. Gravel poping up on the freeway does them in. So mine have not had time to get pitted.

I do have a small water leak in the passenger's side that was there from when the truck was new. No matter how many times I have the windshield replaced or resealed, it still drips in a heavy storm at freeway speeds. I think it must be working its way in through a fault in the windshield frame/cab body welding but I cannot find the spot. I tried to seal a few weld joints with Goop but have not been able to stop it so I am just resolved to live with it.

I drive express ways to and from work and average 2 windshields a year on my work truck. Thankfully I don't have to pay for them! One thing I would do if I was you is rain-x your new windshield. Not only does it work great, it keeps you from having to use your wipers. Dragging your wipers back and forth across the windshield also causes damage because your wipers get impregnated (insert joke here) with sand and dirt.

The windshied can be polished. Here is a plug for doing just that.

Of course I'm not affilliated...etc.

Out here wind moving the dirt around ruins a lot of windows. Mine has been really bad for a while but I haven't got around to fixing it.

When taking out the old windshield, do you have to scrape too much on the pillars to get old glue, in other words, do they scratch up the paint. Mine is cracked by bottom pass. wiper. Thought I would live with it..

Mine is cracked and I need to replace it. I only have 25k on my truck.

How about some more info on the $150 install? What was the name of the company?

Look in your yellow pages or online to see if there is a mobile installer. I paid $150 bucks and the guy changed it out at my work in 1/2 hours. Good job as far as I can tell. Drove to work in drizzle her today and no leakes or noise. looked like a messy job and some specialty tools. You and I probably couldn't buy a new windshield for under $200.

Oh yeah, I talked to one of my buddies who is a sevice director at a GM dealership to find out cost on a new windshield. He said they use a mobile guy for any vehicles in their dealership. The mark up the price 50%.

That is exactly why I would do what you did. I was at the dealer and observed an outside company installing a new windshield on a customer's truck. So, why not cut out the middle man?

With a $500 deductible, I will be out of pocket for this... The less I have to pay, the better I feel! :)
