: Thinking of getting rid of my Dmax
Bearman 05-23-2004, 07:29 PM Hey all, it's been a while since I have been around, but thought I would drop in and say hi. My Dmax is failing me and I am thinking of trading it off on something different. I replaced injectors at 60,000 and now again they need it at 67,000mi. I had the frount seal leak on the Allison and a Axle seal let go all in the last 10,000 mi and am thinking I need to get rid of this truck before warrenty runs out. This is the second Dmax I have had to get rid of due to reliability issues and I have had enough of it. I am thinking of going with a Ford or a Dodge and it pains me because I have always been GM. I will be listing some of my acessories in the for sale section for those that are interested.
Cheers

EEEEZY 05-23-2004, 10:00 PM Yikes! Those of us that are new (like me) to the D'Max scene don't like to see things like this! Too bad you've had so much trouble. Hope things work out better with your next truck. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
CTD 600 05-23-2004, 10:10 PM Cummins...Inline 6 PROVEN! You won't be let down.. except for the Dodge portion of the couple.
Frank Blum 05-23-2004, 10:39 PM I would trade it in for a Dodge if I were you. Later! Frank
rickles04 05-23-2004, 10:48 PM i would burn the damn thing b4 i traded for a dodge
Gray Max 05-23-2004, 11:05 PM I'd rather push a Dmax then drive Cumm-a-part.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Duramax Dually 05-23-2004, 11:18 PM Sorry to hear it Bearman, But you definitely have to do what is best for you. I am a Chevrolet guy to the core and have never had a vehicle let me down. I guess all these things are mechanical and at some point break.
Good Luck on which ever route you go...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
you will be disappointed stepping down to the dodge with respect to room (if you currently own a crew cab) and overall interior. the dodge is sparse at any trim level and the "crew cab" only has room for short rear passengers. Cannot complain about the cummins, only the tranny behind it....... 'ZIP' flame suit is on............
Canada is Dodge Country http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif
Seriously.... that's bad news and bad luck. Nobody wants to be put through two bad vehicles in a row.
BigdaddyG 05-24-2004, 12:57 AM Yep sorry to hear of the problems. All the brands have issues. The Cummins is only proven in it's former non-common rail fuel injected version. We know about the Fords troubles. So far my DMAX is doing good. But I have owned Ford and family have owned Dodge products (both had to be lemon lawed). So pick your poison.
Diesel Power 05-24-2004, 01:58 AM Yes sorry to hear about your troubles. Good luck with whatever decision you chose to make. My dmax just turned 40k yesterday and its been great i've had a couple minor issues but its held up great given what i expect of it.

Bill Gisse 05-24-2004, 05:05 AM On the injector problem it sounds to me like you have a fuel supply problem or just maybe a dealer charged GM for a set of injectors he didn't replace. Some dealers are sneaky .
CRUSHER 05-25-2004, 04:08 AM I would trade it in for a Dodge if I were you. Later! Frank -----What Frank said!------http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif----Phil
ctgmcduramax 06-07-2004, 11:55 PM At 60,000 miles the only problems I've had were worn pitman and Idler arms on front steering. Called GM and dealer and GM agreed to a 50/50 split, with them paying 50 % and me paying other 50 %.
Then I also got 500,000 miles out of my 88 6.2 ext cab.
2MuchFun 06-08-2004, 03:45 AM Well hate to hear it, but I went through hell with my last Ford so I gotta vote for the Dodge/Cummins if you're gonna move on...
Maxter 06-08-2004, 02:29 PM I always been satisfied of my Dmax but in the last 2,000 km, I have had PCV Valve failure (oil all over the place), Injector failure, and Allison leaking out of the convertor housing failure. I almost instantly lost confidence and that made me realise that that even if the Duramax engine has a nice warranty, the Allison, differential and other key components have very punny warranty given there HD status.
From what I can read many people had their Allison leaking out of waranty, there's even a TSB on it and yet GM won't aknoledge that this is repetitive problem. I haven't heard the last verdic on that since my truck is still in the shop for the injectors and allison leak. They both happened on the same 600 mi trip.
If I knew that those would be the only major problems I would encounter that would be ok but I feel let down by the manufacturer when I see repetitive failures that are not the object of a warranty extension. They did a good job on the injectors... they could do the same on the ally...
The dodge seems more interesting suddently.
So Bearman, what did you decide to do?
Bearman 06-09-2004, 12:39 PM So far I have decided to keep this pickup, for now. I got my letter about the injector warrenty and that helps. We will see what failures I have in the future. The problem with these trucks is the used market is so depressed I will take a big hit trading it off or selling it privatly. I would love to run it to 180,000 miles and then get rid of it, but we will see. The type of work I do is lots of gravel roads, off road, mud, dust ect. and I honestly don't know that the Dmax is up to it. THe factory filtering sucks on both fuel and air, I have a aftermarket primary fuel filter and an AFE With Proguard 7 filter with sock and it filters good now. It sure would be nice if a guy could buy a pickup that had good off road clearance, good filtering on everything, good power and reliability right out of the box, but it would probably have a sticker price of $100,000.

rickles04 06-09-2004, 01:19 PM well ctd 600, how well is that cummins goin to run when the rear wheels wont run over the tranny that layin on the ground?
My trucks been spending a good deal of time in the Hat lately - well evenings in the Hat and days in the Richmound, SK area - dry and dusty, no doubt about that. The company that we are contracting to uses all 2500HD ext cabs for there operators - just bigger tires. For the really bad spots they've got the tracks that mount on a tripod frame on all four corners - instant 10" lift, extremely rough.
Bearman I got 22,000 for my 01 GMC with 72,000 miles. I thought that was pretty good.
ratlover 06-09-2004, 04:11 PM Bearman, why do you say stock air filtering sucks? JMO but I think the factory paper air filter does a very good job of keeping dirt outa the engine and I also think its pretty freeflowing. JMO
I stuck a UNI filter in the factory box just because at 50$ it wont take long to pay for itself compared to replacing the fact. at $25-30
About the truck though, do whats best for you but although you may have gotten a lemon, I dont think the Chevy trucks are flawed from the begining. Sucks that you got stuck with 2 bad ones in a row if its not dealer/tech related probs.

Hey, Richmound is where I work. I am a completions consultant presently handiling the fracing for Apache. If you see a Haliburton Frac crew around, drop by, I will be there if it ever quits raining. I saw those tracked HD2500 at the station just south of Richmound and I WANT ONE, looks like it would be way cool to go crunching with. Ore I will take one of those 10 new sleds they bought the opertors last year http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

I always had dust in the intake tube with stock paper, K&N only stops rocks and small birds, Amsoil I always found dust to (not as much as paper) The proguard 7 with a sock I can run a white glove through there and it comes out clean. When I say i work in a dusty environment I mean DUSTY, hard to breath in gross ugly fine dust. After a frac crew goes in on a lease road there may be a foot of powder on the road. If you ran a stock filter out there for long I am sure you would dust the engine.

Dodge has had a myriad of tranny and front end problems over the years. Recently, lift pump problems. They haven't stepped up and offered any extended coverages that I've ever heard of. Sadly, the big three have little competition in this segment, so they all have some serious weaknesses. IMO, (I've owned Fords, and used Dodges at work) the GM's are the lesser of three evils. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

That's who we're working for, by the sounds of things you could be a busy man for the next few years with the proposed drilling program in those parts of the world.
Frank Blum 06-10-2004, 05:52 PM Bearman, you need to find out what the off road race trucks are running for air intakes. They can run the Baja 1000 without destroying an engine. Any filter that works is going to plug on a regular basis in your working conditions. So are your lungs for that matter. I knew before I bought my truck that it didn't have the clearance for serious off roading. It will stay in a straight line at speed on gravel roads better than my last three 1500s. Later! Frank
captainmal 06-10-2004, 09:58 PM Some people just can't get out of the dark ages. Things like the GM Standyne injector pumps on the obsolete 6.5 engines and the occasional lift pumps on the old mechanical injecter Cummins keep coming back.
Gm has not used those old injector pumps since around '01 and Cummins has not used those old lift pumps since around '02.
Sometimes I just have to wonder.
